Sun City Girls
Sun City Girls are a great art-rock band that you can get off me on slsk. Torch of the Mystics has a strong eastern tinge, namely because the guitarist and bassist (brothers)'s uncle is from Lebanon. The two would watch their uncle and their uncle's eastern friends jam and that's one of their main influences. It's really good **** though, especially track four, Space Prophet Dogon. Their other records range from a sort of punk to a freeform jazz freakout to a drone. They have NO one particular sound. They started off as a band playing really fast punk that scared the hipsters, then they played a more eclectic sound which attracted them back again, and have been experimenting forever. At one point, they were called Paris 1942 and had Mo Tucker (from the VU) as their drummer. Their record from as Paris 1942 has a very garage rock early punk type sound. They even cover She Cracked by the Modern Lovers. I really do highly reccomend them; they are good. All their cds have been good. Even Richard Bishop's, the guitarist, solo effort has been great. It's an acoustic record and he's really adept at his instrument.
Here is a yousendit zip file. I hope you can all play m4a's. If not, you should be able to use quicktime to play them and if that fails, download foobar2000. It's the superiour program for listening to music. http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3S2024N8F3OW72UY7M5BAXZ0N4 |
That's Torch of the Mystics; their most 'accessible' album.

Can you upload just one song? My computer doesn't have enough space to hold a full album.

Oh well. I actually try to contribute in the punk forums, unlike alt/indie where I hate everyone because it's been full with people who just say that Connor Oberst or the Decemberists are the best thing ever. But sometimes there's decent things there. |

Sun City Girls rule. And their live stuff is incredible to. Dante's Disneyland Inferno is incredible. Torch of the Mystics is great as well.
More people need to check out this group. |
i found this site through search engine while looking for info to compile my SCG collection on soulseek, so i figured i'd get a word in here. this looks like a pretty good forum, and it's one of those UBB forumz which easy to read and navigate (i hate the older message boards)
SCG are hardly a "punk" band in the most immediate sense. they actually played their first gig to support Black Flag and started out as sort of a typical garage punk band, but none of that type of music of theirs was ever really released except for "Bobby Sands Boogie". also the Fugs cover "CIA Man" from Horse **** Phepner, which is an awesome post-punk album. yeah, "Space Prophet Dogon" is really not the best song to represent them at all. come to think of it, it's completely impossible to represent them in one song. Eastern and Arabic folk influences, free jazz, space rock, rude musical comedy, entire albums devoted to nothing but field recordings... where do you begin? i'd rec any of the following songs: Apna Desh Blue Mamba Esoterica of Abyssinia The Flower Zingka Doi Mind Bomb Super Meme Kickin' the Dragon (comp. version) Caravan CIA Man Eyeball in a Quart Jar of Snot Nancy Wild World of Animals Coffee with Eyelash Dead Chick in the River Cigar Shaped the Moonlight The Fine-Tuned Machines of Lemuri Kal El Lazi Kad Ham On the Sign Black Tent jeez, that's just the beginning! on soulseek i'm roswellseedsnstems they have a myspace page. good stuff.
