Forearm pain
Lately I've been experiencing some pain in my forearm. its only on the top of the forearm (bottom feels fine), and is mainly towards the top of the forearm, furthest from the hand. My hand/wrist feels fine. It feels like it may just be that the radial muscle is sore, but maybe something else? I believe my technique is pretty clean, I try to keep everything pretty loose and I dont have a death grip on the stick with my entire hand.
Any thoughts? |
Having you been working out? Sometimes after I get back from the gym my forearm (near the elbow joint) hurt like hell.

Is it below your thumb? As i have that and found it was due to my thumb pressing hard aganst the stick. Or it may be RSI.

Is it in the band of tendons on your forarm, as you may have pulled them. But i think that may be to low.

the pain starts halfway up my forearm and continues all the way up it. my upper arm doesnt hurt at all

Not sure then, i think that it may be RSI then.

Do you strech out before you jam?

no, i dont. i know i probably should, but i havent run into problems thus far.

try moving your fingers out in front of you, is it those muscles?

Have you changed anything on your kit? The snare height? Throne height? Some times extreme angles of play can irritate the muscles. If your technique is good and you stay relaxed I really couldnt tell you unless I saw you playing.

don't masturbate so often... O comon you were all thinking that, but out of a ll seriousness Billy Ward said "Drumming is not a track and field event" which means if your feeling pain stop take a break, you might be doing a back beat with your left hand over your shoulder so that could be it.

yes, although it doesnt hurt when i move my fingers, only when i press hard at the top of the forearm. it feels somewhat sore if i clench a fist |

ur techinque is bad
and dont over stress ur play. make sure u are playing relaxed. dont force it |
He has said that he has good technique. I think is what jim said.. something has changed or isnt quite right so your kit could be causing it. I had that same problem. Make sure you set your kit up close to the same everytime you move it around. Set up one drum at a time and start with the snare by "imagining where it should go based on your throme height. then do the same for the rest of the kit.

I told myself that 4 years ago after getting knee pain after every baseball game (I played Catcher). Last December I had to have knee surgery, so not really the best idea. Does it only happen after you drum? |
I know whtat you mean...have you been trying to play a marchiung bass drum latrely? cuz when i first started that mine felt like it was on fire!
Have you been jamming on any real thick/heavy cymbols? thast aggrivates my muscles...but im still a beginner in set playing Hope you find out what going on man! |

i just realized it could be from playing the trumpet, as it hurts a little when i do that, plus that would explain why its only my right hand. there also appears to be a very, very faint bruise where it hurts

Heh...that seems likely, especially if it's only for 1-2 hours a day. I *highly* recommend that you stretch and devise a warmup routine if you don't already have one, however. I usually will go through my practice routine and then shake out my hands until they feel loose as hell before seriously practicing..helps to keep the blood flow going and to prevent getting sore joints & aches. Even if you do play relaxed and with proper technique, you can still hurt yourself if you're not properly warmed up and stretched simply because you have to hold your hand/fingers in that position for so long and of course the repetitive motion.

When you practice the trumpet - how's the posture????
I know this sounds like it's from left feild but this may be a back issue. It is not uncommon for problems with our back to cause irritation at the elbow, arm shoulder, hand etc..... my mother was a physical therapist - I've had all sorts of odd pains because of a back condition ( corrected by stretching and exercise) I wonder if your locking the left arm and then creating a posture problem that causes agitation on the right because those are the moving muscle groups in relation to the poor posture. |
i guess it could do with trumpet, but then again it may just be a sign or wear an tear (without the tear) obviously lay back on playing alot with ure right hand, best to try wait it out and see what comes up. If the pain gets worse or it occurs more regulerly then id recommend say g'day to a doctor..
but for now just do some streches and warmups before you play drums.. also for trumpet make sure your not stiff anyway, in everything stay totally relaxed, and dont cramp your arm up like some peeps do. keep a straight back posture.. im sure it will pass over soon. I used to get a terrible back pain from sittin on my throne for to long, i got over it by stretchin my back on the occasion and also keep you posture as straight as possible. that also influences non crazy angles because if ure sittin low you have to kinda fully jump to hit something flattish, but once u sit at the correct height and you keep your back straight, it really improves your playing and it allows you to play on flatter toms. |
ice it, rest it, stretch it and take a break for a few days of all activities (yes, including masturbation :lol: )
