The NEW Pop-Punk forced listening

Reviving this thread from the past, the Pop-Punk forum felt this needed to be restored for everyone to see

The rules are simple. I am going to post 3 songs at the bottom of this thread, and you have to post saying you will listen to one of those songs. You must then review it, and recommend another 3 songs for someone else to be "forced" to listen to

RULES:

DON'T SPAM!
If someone has already called dibs on a song, you cannot call dibs on it. If you both call it at the same time and they call it before you (I.E. their post shows up above yours), please delete yours. I doubt 1 post is going to hurt your post count if you care so much
The idea is to recommend songs which you think not many people will have heard. So don't suggest Green Day or Blink-182
When you list your songs, be sure to include a rough genre like I have below. Include the band name and song title as well (Obviously)
Try not to review a song you have already heard, and if you have heard all 3 then leave it for someone else who hasn't heard any of them. It's not really forced listening if you have listened to them somewhere else, is it?
The ONLY posts that should be in this thread are dibs are reviews. I'm not bothered about dibs because they don't exactly clutter it up, but please don't spam. If you feel it necessary to make a bump, once someone has replied, delete your bump please
Since I said I would review one of Vince's songs from the previous thread, I'm going to review that now and post my suggestions below it.

Mod Flanders Conspiracy - Such is the Wrath of the Thrice Angered Manatee
The songs starts off with a poorly executed acapella intro, leading into a calmly played melody which I personally thought was ruined by the gritty vocals. We then enter a more chaotic breakdown which suits the singers rough style. The guitars sound well played, although a little over-distorted, and the drumming is on-par. It slows down slightly, only to be led into one of the funkiest basslines I have heard in a while, accompanied by a Korn-esque beatbox-type-thing. The song then repeats itself basically.

I thought the song was very random, and had too many different sounding sections. It started quiet and slow, then sped straight up into a hardcore part, then led into a softer more pop-punk style and finished off with a funky and hasty section. Then it repeated.

I think this song needed to find it's identity more instead of trying to incorporate many different styles into it. It works well with 2 styles in some songs, but too many is too much sometimes. In this case, it is. The guitar work is done well, and the drummer and bassist certainly proved they could play the different themes. But the vocalist. He was a problem. He seems like a very loud singer, and on the melodic and slow parts it didn't work for me at all. If they could get a better voice and cut the song in 2, concentrating more on the styles they have in it, I think this song would be a lot better.

Emanuel - The Hey Man

The song starts off really strongly with shouting vocals, over cool guitar work.
The main vocals in the song are shouting, which i think ruins it, but the bridge is excellent, it's more melodic and sounds great, he sings here instead of shouting, the Chorus is very aggresive and simple. There is also a slower part, a break down at about 2 :24 which is very good, and catchy.
The music is amazing, and the guitar is especially great.
Overall it's a great song, only the shouting vocals ruin it a bit imo.

Starts kinda fast, has some weird vocals, good bass work in the background. I've been meaning to check this band out for a while, I was under the impression they'd be similar to QOTSA, but this song perhaps recalls more of a Descendents feel to it, which is cool. The chorus is pretty much a cool standara pop-punk style, and the phone call part with the sirens after is kinda weird but adds something to the song. It's kinda one dimensional though, like one pace (pretty fast), althought the one dimension it's in kicks *** ;)

In my opinion Almost Here is probably the best record released yet this year. This song is one of the better on the album, it starts off with just drums and some guitar and William's unique voice. I really like the lyrics in this song as well, like in the chorus where he sings "When you said you were falling apart/I thought you meant that you were falling apart" It has a really bouncy feel to it that really makes you want to sing along. This song probably is the best example of The Academy Is...'s sound. It has its own unique thing going on while still being able to make listener friendly pop music.

First off I'd like to say that I love the lyrics. During the start of the song, before the drums, there's that sound, I think it wrecked the introduction but none the less, the introduction was still amazing. At some parts the vocals sound slurry which makes me cringe. I love the end guitar riff. I indeed like this song and will no doubt listen to them again. For some peculiar reason, this song's beat reminds me of spiderman. :/

Razorlight - Golden Touch

Upbeat intro. Almost ska-style guitar. Builds up instrumentally as it progresses. Very simple piece, instumentally structured and very vocally focused. Plenty of depth to the piece though. I like the harmonies they incorporate, but the vocals/drums mixed so much higher than the guiar and bass detracts a bit I think and makes it a bit poppy for my tastes. I think with some different mixing I would have enjoyed it more, but it's still a fun and happy song, and would probably appeal to most people here more than it did to me.

Wow this wasn't what I expected, closer to TBS than Dashboard.... Very cool song so far, kinda harsher vocals than I thought, I thought they would be wussy vocals :p All in all though, kind of a starand 'emo' song, kinda washed over me, didn't really stand out a great deal. Not terribly good, but not terribly bad either. IA suprise at least, not exactly a bad or a pleasent one though.

Rufio - Science Fiction

Starts off with a cool guitar riff, and very fast. Great guitarwork all the way through the song, I don't like the vocals much, don't seem very strong.
I like the Chorus and the bridge a lot, the verses' are ok, the guitarist must be one of the best in Pop-punk. The pace of the song stays fast all the way through.
Only the vocals let it down imo.

Dropkick Murphys- Good Rats (3:03)

An excellent song!

This begins with a nice rolling drum pattern, similar to one that would accompany marching or at the beginning of a film. The intro then moves into a nice slow beat whcih is accompanied by the DKM's traditional bag pipe sound.

The first verse begins after around 20 seconds with vocals that are rough but clear and fit very well. They begin telling a story about a character named Vermin McCann, a man who they say enjoys a drink and a sing along in a pub. The singer is accompanied only by a very simple drum beat which helps to emphasize the vocals and makes the song very catchy and easy to listen to.

The sing along chorus begins after around 50 seconds with the count in 'one-two, one-two-three-four!'. At this point the whole band cuts in to create an excellent 'drinking song' atmosphere.

The second verse and chorus follow much the same pattern as the first, carrying the song along in good style and at good pace. The third verse in sung by the bassist in a slightly higher and more shouty style, which makes a nice change and adds variety to the song.

Variety is manitained when after that verse the next chorus is sung by the pair over a simple rolloing drum beat, before the song returns to it's first passion and ends after a couple more reditions of the chorus.

An excellent song, one of DKM's best.

Butch Walker - My Way (4:00)

Different from what I usually prefer to listen to. Opens with some kinda weird chanty thingy, I don't really know how else to describe it. Cool beats, but I can't say I like the lyrics, kinda lame, but not to the point where it ruins the song. The chorus is catchy and fun to listen to. I like the second verse better than the first lyrically, but that really makes no difference, I just figured I'd point that out.

Then there's a cool guitar solo type thingy at about 1:40 which is cool, that leads to my favorite part of the song so far, where the singer sings over nothing but a guitar. As he repeats "I don't want to, be the one who..." the whole band gets back into it building up to the chorus, which I think is really cool. Then the chorus just sorta trails off into silence.

Now, I wasn't sure if this was still the same song, but it picks back up with some acoustic guitar strumming that lasts for about 40 seconds and then just sort of ends. I didn't fully understand that, but overall the song was cool to listen to, and pretty neat. 7/10.

Ok, yousendit isn't agreeing with it, so if anyone needs the songs, just IM me:

I Hate Myself - Less Than Nothing

Waking Ashland - I Am For You
I really like the intro. It's very calm, the guitar picking is clean and goes well with the mellow vocals. As it builds up, the piano really adds a new depth to it. I like it. In the chorus I think, I like the vocals and how high they are. Quite impressive. Another thing I like about this song is the drumming. Even with the piano and clean guitar, the drum beats sound quite fast and actually go really well with the smooth sound of the song.

I really like the bridge as well, the backing vocals fit perfectly with the main vocals and just give it that little more emotion. Overall, I really like this song. It's not often you hear mellow pop-punk music like Mae or Straylight Run with fast drumming, but Waking Ashland have done it well. Nice song, great vocals. 8/10

Whoa...that chick is pretty good looking ;)

The guy's vocals are just a little bit high. I don't know why, but I don't like guys who almost sound like chicks :-/ Very poppy sound. That slight British accent is comical to me hehe. Anyways, pretty basic structure, verses and choruses with a solo. Lots of octave chords and neat little fills throughout to fill in the sound. Drums aren't mixed very high. I don't know what to say really, it wasn't bad, but nothing stood out to me about it at all :-/

Rancid Dan 04-24-2005 07:51 AM

Manic Street Preachers - PCP

Starts off with a eiery guitar riff, and then everything kicks in full pelt for a very catchy riff with very nice chord changes. The vocals start and they are very powerful and dominating, with palm muted chords in the background. The Bridge is good, slower and leading into the chorus, it's more melodic and he sings more here, rather than shouting. The Chorus kicks in after a nice drum roll and the chorus is very effective, with very strong vocals shouting over hard guitar work, and it leads into the verse again by using palm muted chords. After the second chorus a very nice solo takes place, and the structure of the song changes as it goes back into the chorus again.
Lyrics were very good, and meant a lot. I enjoyed it, and may look into them.

Cheese - Where's My Slice?

It starts out with a slow riff, and then Fat Mike's weird vocals come in. It speeds up at about 0:27. The chorus comes in at about 0:40, with some nice backup vocals. The song is pretty much the same throughout the whole song, with a few more verses and choruses. Though it sounds like the song is about cheese, it's actually a good political message. It's a good song, but I think there's a lot better on Ribbed.
