what does the R stand for on the major scales - i guess the X is where you put your fingers

The r stands for Root. It is the root note of the scale. :thumb:

hmm....iv been playing bass for roughly a year and a half but ive never really looked much into the theory (mostly because it confuses me!), your sheet really helps with scale positions (now when our guitarist says hes playing in g minor il now what to do!!) but what does the chord formula's bit mean (the table on the right handside with a series of numbers)? ive tried to understand the circle of fiths but i cant make any sense of it either.

Those are the notes that make up that chord. so if it says 1st 3rd 5th, to build that chord you would take the scale of the chord you wanted. If it was an A major chord then the notes would be 1st=A 3=C# 5th=E. you would just go in the order the scales are written out in the table beside the formulas.

The circle of 5ths has many uses, you can build scales from it, chord progressions. Aslo when writing songs notes closer sound better, and going clock wise makes the song sound like it is moving forward, and going counterclock wise makes the song sound like it is slowing down.
