Zen and Drums

Yeh you older guys know that this is an old thread but it is probably worth bringing up seeing as the topics on D&P are all very similar these days.

For those that haven't seen this before, this is an art used by the Japanese. In effect it is supposed to instill a sense of curiosity in a students mind. This concept has been taken (along with a bit of humour) by Sonor Hilite,an old MXer. Not all the following zen koans were done by him.

==================================================

If a stick breaks and no one hears you do it did it really happen?

When using brushes do you get a cleaner sound?

If I use 2 sticks of different weights will I play in circles?

Can they (you know the're out there) still see in my head if I am surrounded by 25 of the biggest shiniest cymbals I can find?

If I turn my kit round to left handed can I play backwards?

If I mount my cymbals upside down can I get that cool zzzZZT reverse cymbal sound?

If I buy exactly the same kit and sticks as my drumming hero will this make me play and sound exactly like them?

If there were no gravity, and you struck a bass drum, would it ring forever?

If you strike a drum, with no head (not the shell, the actual part where the head goes (open space)) will the shell vibrate?

If you record yourself knocking over a cymbal stand, is it music?

How good does one have to be before what one is playing transmutes from "making noise" to "playing music?"

If one plays music stoned and alone, it is likely that he will play like absolute crap, but think he is playing like a god reborn. Is he playing like absolute crap, or like a god reborn?
(Kinda like a tree falls in the forest for drug-induced drumming)

If a tree falls on your drumset, is it a musician?

If you play with the thick end of the sticks does is make you a heavier drummer?

If you always arrive 10 minutes early does it make you a faster drummer?

If you do your homework on your snare, does it make you a smarter drummer?

If you shot the rim of a snare with a shotgun, would it sound the same as a rimshot?

If someone knocked you off of your throne, then were you really a king?

If you could fit your sticks on the head of a drum without the sticks touching the rim, then would they turn into Ahead drumsticks?

If you have a very good stool... are you on a good diet?

Are guys with huge drum kits compensating for something?

Are you still making music if all you do is use Whole Note rests?

What is the sound of one hi-hat cymbal pedalling?

Is Ginger Baker like coffee?

If nobody listens to Terry Bozzio, does he stop playing?

Why is the bass drum often referred to as a kick drum, when you do not kick it?

If you remove the bottom head but leave the snares on is it still a snare drum?

If you put snare wires on a tom does it make it a snare drum?

If nobody reads this, did I ever write it?

Come up with your own and post them, it's quite interesting, and encourages thinking.......less stupid questions on forum.....

Why is it called a ride cymbal when it doesn't actually take you anywhere?

Does Batman play his kit while hes upside down?

If you practiced your crashing technique, do you have a better chance of surviving a car crash?

If a stand is knocked over, is it still standing? Is it still a stand?

If you pumped gas between two layers of a drum head, is it a Hydraulic head?

Alot of this, I found quite stupid.

lpmeca 01-09-2005 04:35 PM

If you put crap in a snare drum would it sound "Crappy"?

Oh and as far as 1 hi hat cymbal pedal sound I already know. I have a crash cymbal mounted on a hi hat stand and out of curiosity I used the pedal it actually sounds pretty good and it kind of made the grip slip and drop the cymbal but i fixed it.

If you splash a splash cymbal, how long does it take to dry?

If you improve your chops, does your cooking improve?

Do drummers drive better using stick?

If your girlfriend is a drummer, would she be more comfortable if you were a "2A" in the pants?

Jezen 12-21-2005 09:26 PM

Only if she was marching.
