tunnning in a different key
ok... alot of the songs thati want to play are in a different key other than the normal E A D G. i need to know how to tune it differntly so i can play these songs (most of linkin park on a 4 string)
|
but a tuner... or learn to tune with harmonics
|
Learn relative tuning, its easy and cheaper than buying a tuner. You have to know the notes on your bass to do relative tuning, but if you remember that your bass is tuned in 5ths (until you put it in a drop tuning) you'll have no problem.

Basses are tuned in 4ths.... |
im pretty sure i tune mine in 5ths. chromatic 5ths anyway. or major 4ths. so your right. i think he means 5ths as in the 5th fret.
|
learn the notes on ur bass and u can tune to any key u want. i dont know any of the chormatic majors blah blah but i know the notes and i can tune to any key that i want. or get a 15 dollar tuner taht will help you as well
|
Just have to hope your bass isn't knocked out of tune or out of tune in the first place.
... are you quite serious?
http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/article.php?a=253 ^ full explanation there
Yes I was :amaze: But meh... Everything is relative. It may be 4ths after the major scale but it's the 5th in the chromatic scale.. Thanks for enlightening me on intervals though :thumb: |
ITs ok, it is 4th and it is 5ths it just depends which direction you go in the circle of 5ths ;)

Actually ^_^ it's more dependant on which direction you're going in relation to a note. If you're going from an E up to an A, it's a 4th; E down to an A is a 5th.
E F F# G G# A Count the steps my friend
I still see a 4th...
Yes I was But meh... Everything is relative. It may be 4ths after the major scale but it's the 5th in the chromatic scale.. Thanks for enlightening me on intervals though
I'll explain: Major scales | Natural Minor show these intervals (numbers equal scale degrees used, then interval between them), then Variations on scale degrees 1-2 = M2 | 1-2 = M2 | A2=m3, d2=P-unison 1-3 = M3 | 1-3 = m3 | A3=P4, d3=M2 1-4 = P4 | 1-4 = P4 | A4=d5, d4=M3 1-5 = P5 | 1-5 = P5 | A5=m6, d5=A4 1-6 = M6 | 1-6 = m6 | A6=m7, d6=P5 1-7 = M7 | 1-7 = m7 | A7=P8, d7=M6 1-8 = P8 | 1-8 = P8 | A8=m9=cm2(compound minor second), d8=M7 Intervals are the same no matter what scale you use. There is always going the be the same distance between certain intervals. Hope that clears up any confusion, and creates a little :naughty: I should have just let the freeking link explain... |

ok a perfect 4th is five half steps...
E A D G is 4ths. linkin park use down a half step = Eb Ab Db Gb and then a dropped low string to Db. tune to Eb and learn how to use drop D tuning by ear, its easy to go in and out of drop D once you learn tuning strings relatively with harmonics. all of hybrid theory uses drop Db but most if not all of meteora uses a 5 string, sometimes tuned B E A D G and sometimes Bb Eb Ab Db Gb, so you're S.o.L. if you want to play most of those songs in the proper octave. |
how do you tune bass to flats???
|
Press the first fret and tune to E standard or whatever you're tuning to.
|
Press the first fret and tune to E standard or whatever you're tuning to.
so if im tuning the bass to Db Ab Eb Gb........... i just press first fret( on A) and tune until it gets to 'A' on the tuner...right and that will make it flat?? |

Seconded. Basses are tuned in fourths, end of discussion. |
ahh if only this discussion wasnt nearly 2 years old, i'd think it already had ended
