K, Im tired of the 20 DT threads a day. Post it all here. Now I have a reason to ban people who annoy me with the threads!!!!

And here is my official thoughts on the band.

"Probably a good idea. You'll cut the amount of threads by at least 300. Sometimes I wonder if anybody has anything new to say about them, you know? Everybody thinks they're awesome, awesome, awesome. "Portnoy's so good! Petrucci's the best guitarist alive!" etc. etc. It'd be interesting to see which directions an official thread would go in."

Anyway, let's get this ball rolling. My first DT album was 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence, and I was awestruck by the utter superiority of the songwriting and technical abilities of the band. I'm a bit curious, though, because 6 Degrees remains my favorite album despite owning nearly every album they've got(except for...what was it...Dreams and...something.... ;) ). But most people on mx seem to dislike it quite a bit. Why so? Feel free to include your own personal favorite, with reasons.

(I don't know...is this how the official threads start? Oh well)

hahaha yea, good enough. I do like Dream Theater. The whole band is massively talented. I have the Portnoy drumming dvds and he is really a cool guy. He is a good drummer, I don't think he is a phenominal drummer, but very good.

I tend to agree. Portnoy is very technically capable, but there seems to be a bit of stagnation setting in as far as the level of creativity he has when constructing his beats on recent releases, particularly Train of Thought. Personally, I think our Sonor posterboy, Danny Carey, beats the crap out of Portnoy any day of the week, but Portnoy is still very good. He may, however, (dare I say it?) be declining. But hey, if Neil Peart can take drum lessons, so can Mikey.

metropolis pt.1 rules

Images and Words was my first DT album. I absolutely loved it, and it led me to my second, 6DOIT. Loved that as well. I'm currently looking for a third album to purchase, but I can only find FIF, which I have been warned against.

Great idea guys, and good job SFK for putting it up, we needed it.

But anywho, my first full Dream Theater album was Scenes From A Memory, and it blew me away the first time I listened to it. The first Dream Theater song I heard was Erotomania, and that too blew my mind of what skill was and what an insturmental was as well...

First song: Glass Prison
First CD: SDOIT
Second CD: SFAM

Listen to Scenes From A Memory and A Change Of Season's and tell me they have no song writing ability.

A change of seasons is a good album, so is Scenes from a Memory, but I don't like any more of their stuff.

I think it's cool, although James holds back a bit too much with singing, maybe to safe his voice?

Everybody get the Live at Budokan DVD, it is one of the most amazing dvd's I have ever seen. Go get it if you dont have it..... NOW.

The Scenes From New York dvd is pretty cool ,too!!i'll buy the live at budokan dvd for 100% but i didnt have the chance yet hehe!^^

Was listening to songs from the live at Budokan cd, some of the most boring **** ive ever heard IMO, they arent called Dream Theater for nothing, its enough to put you to sleep

Dream Theater are probably still my favourite band, but to be honest after nearly 3 years of holding that No.1 spot I've kinda lost interest. There's just so much more stuff that I listen to now. Still, even though they aren't as regular on my playlist now, some songs still remain some of my favourites, in particular A Change Of Seasons, which is probably my favourite song ever.

I just realised I haven't bothered to listen to Scenes From A Memory in about 5 months, even though at one point it was my favourite album.

I think DT is my fav band. They are incredible. Both Petrucci and Portnoy are f***in incredibly good! I own 6DOIT and Train of thought, I wanna Buy SFAM.

A change of seaseon is prorbably their best song, one of their longest too, its 23 min long! But the 6 degrees of inner turbulence song lasts 42 f***in minutes!

Yeah, they are a great band...

i have scenes from a memory, awake, images and words, trasin of thaught and a change of seasons they all are awsome, and unique

I still don't see how people can call Dream Theater bad song writers....

Anyway, my favourite album is probably Awake, favourite song off that album is Voices. My favourite Dream Theater song off all time though is definately Metropolis Part One.

I agree with you Stagefrightken, dream theater is where the science of music meets the power of a metal band. Portnoy is one of the best drummers in the world and he plays the most difficult drum notes I've seen. Dave Lombardo used to be the best drummer for me but now Portnoy has changed the world and the ideas of the drummers.
The only thing I disagree about you?

To any who think that Portnoy is "declining", I might have to agree. I only have three discs, Awake, 6DoIT, and Train of Thought...and the work on Train of Thought was simple compared to some of his other stuff, I thought. Alot of his ToT thought was based on *bass-snare-bassbass-snare* or such patterns. It was more speed and bass drum oriented than his other work. And yes, Danny Carey could own Portnoy any day of the week, I am certain of it :p

Anyone else Petrucci's ToT solos are pretty soulless at times? Particularly the In the Name of God solo? I can't stand it, it just lacks all emotion to me...compared to some of his earlier stuff, like the solo in Lie, or The Glass Prison.

It's what they were going for, a super-heavy record. 6DoIT proves that they can have a heavy record with their signature style; they were trying something new.

What i like most about ToT is that Rudess and Myung are more active than ever. I love the Bass tapping on the intro to This Dying Soul, and the Keyboard parts in Stream of Consciousness and Endless Sacrifice. ToT isn't their best, but i'd still put it on par with their 6DoIT or Awake.

And it's not that Portnoy is declining, its just that he doesn't really go anywhere. His style hasn't evolved.

JoZ, if you don't have Scenes From A Memory, Images and Words, and A Change Of Seasons, go get them now. These three records represent all that is truly Dream Theater. Everything in between is progression in style or experimentation for them.

First off, what bass tapping in This Dying Soul?? I don't know of any such tapping :confused:

Secondly, I didn't say he was declining, I said some people thought he was :p

Thirdly, I have heard I&W, and I was really not impressed with it aside from a couple of songs. I think it's severely overrated, actually.

Don't get me wrong i love dream theater!! But they'd be so much better with a different vocalist and better lyrics, their vocalist and lyrics are their downfall. I mean the drumming and guitar work is spectacular to say the least
