Official Recommendations Thread!

This thread is where everybody recommends bands to everybody else, so if someone comes in going "Hay where can I find bands that sound like blah blah blah" we can all yell "RECOMMENDATIONS THREAD!" at them.

The way this thread works: When you make your post, first name the genre of music the bands fit under, then name the bands and (optional) provide links. I will edit the post below as bands are posted, so people don't have to comb through the whole thread to find bands they want. However, if you want you can provide a short description in your post, it will not make it into the list but people searching for more info can still read it in your post.

If someone posts a band in a genre you don't agree with, simply state what genre you think they should be under, and the band will simply be posted under both genres. Compromises are fun!

Please keep this thread clean of spam, thanks!

The Band List

Organized by genre, not all bands have links, but it doesn't mean they don't have websites. Words in quotation marks denote recommended songs.

Here’s how I’ll do this. I’ll give genre, I will not give a purevolume site, simply because it would take too long, that doesn‘t mean there isn‘t one though, I advise you try. I’ll post a song to download as well, and if I don‘t say one, it means “get anything“. This is in alphabetical order.

The genre’s and comparisons aren’t the best. I’m half asleep as I’m writing this, so give me a break. They should decent, if not good though.

Metalcore:
36 Crazyfists - Metalcore with nice, melodic singing. There’s some Alternative in them. “Installing The Catheter”
A Fall Farewell - Metalcore. For people who wish Across Five Aprils was always heavy. Quality stuff. “With Blessed Grace”
A Jealousy Issue - For fans of early Poison the Well. Same singer as PTW’s original EP. “In The Shape Of Stars”
A Life Once Lost - Metalcore/grindcore. The screamers remind me of Anah Aevia. “A Falls River Farewell”
A Thousand Falling Skies - Metalcore. For fans of Dead To Fall.
The Agony Scene - Metalcore with a very unique screamer. For fan of As I Lay Dying and Haste The Day. “Judas” “We Bury Our Dead At Down”
Anterrabae - For fans of Norma Jean. “How Joey Got His Grove Back”
Arma Angelus - The band metalcore band that formed Fall Out Boy. I don’t know who to compare them to. “To Feel No More Bitterness Forever”
August Burns Red - For fans of Dead To Fall. “You Should Be Taking Flight Now”

Pop-Punk
5 Day Ahead - Good quality pop-punk without a whiny singer. Not very deep at all. Occasional screaming, like a less catchy Fall Out Boy. “Famous Last Words”
504 - Another quality pop-punk without a whiny singer. Not very original. “Kissing Old Friends”
A Step Behind - Loud pop-punk without a whiny winger. Quality stuff.
A Thorn For Every Heart - Pop-punk/post-hardcore. They have a Thursday-esque quality to them. “I Night To Remember, A Morning To Forget”
A Wilhelm Scream - Very talented pop-punk/punk/hardcore mix. Insane live show. A fan of any of those three genres should check them out. “Anchor End” “The Rip”
Albert React - Pop-punk with a hint of post-hardcore. For fans of Thursday. “Breathe”
All Rights Reserved - Post-hardcore/pop-punk. Talented guys. “You Know Who You Are”
Anadivine - Like Emery, but with more pop-punk influence. “Alcohol And Oxygen”
Armor For Sleep - Light, feel good (or not so good) pop-punk. For fans of Taking Back Sunday (maybe) “My Town” “Being Your Walls”

Post-hardcore
A Thorn For Every Heart - Pop-punk/post-hardcore. They have a Thursday-esque quality to them. “I Night To Remember, A Morning To Forget”
Anthym - For fans of At A Loss. There’s pop-punk, post-hardcore and emocore in these guys. “Broken Vessel”
Albert React - Pop-punk with a hint of post-hardcore. For fans of Thursday. “Breathe”
All Rights Reserved - Post-hardcore/pop-punk. Talented guys. “You Know Who You Are”
Anthym - For fans of At A Loss. There’s pop-punk, post-hardcore and emocore in these guys. “Broken Vessel”
At A Loss - A diverse pop-punk/post-hardcore/rock band. “To This Cross”

Hardcore
A Wilhelm Scream - Very talented pop-punk/punk/hardcore mix. Insane live show. A fan of any of those three genres should check them out. “Anchor End” “The Rip”
A18 - A not-as-good-but-still-decent Blood For Blood copy.

Emocore
A Closing Skyline - Emocore. For fans of Across Five Aprils (although ACS is a bit heavier). “Trial By Fire”
Across Five Aprils - Legendary emocore band. And fan of the genre need to listen. Their newest EP isn’t exactly great (to put it simply, it almost sounds like Story Of The Year), but “A Tragedy In Progress” easily goes down as one of my favorite albums. “Blue Eyed Suicide” “Pawn Shop Promises”
Anadivine - Like Emery, but with more pop-punk influence. “Alcohol And Oxygen”

Emo/Screamo
A Day In Black And White - Emo/screamo in Level-plane. Worth a check out for any fan of (real) emo/screamo.
A Petal Fallen - Emocore/emo. Not sure who to compare them to...a stretch would be Circle Takes The Square.

Acoustic
A Farewell To Arms - Legendary acoustic band. Any fan of acoustic should try them out. “The Road Less Traveled”

Indie/Mellow
American Football - Talented mellow band. No distortion, so if you’re looking for something heavy, look elsewhere.
Ariel Kill Him - Mellow indie band. Quality shiz-nit. “Bevinson In Winoka”

Next post will be for "B" bands.

Jon that is beautiful, I think I love you. One teensy favor though, could you organize the bands by genre next time? It would make my job a lot easier.

Eh..I'll see what I can do. I'll still be going by letter though.

I'll try to have at least one letter a day, but it takes a while.

And by the way, if anyone wants anything by any of the bands I mention, IM me at ibleedtheskyi or tell me your g-mail acount and I'll send some songs, or the album if you want.

PDWAB 10-15-2004 01:27 PM

Yeah, the reason I haven't gotten your bands in the list yet is because I have to copy the band, find the genre in the list, and then paste it, and it's a little time-consuming, plus my browser kept shutting down on me yesterday.

BridgeToSolace 10-15-2004 01:48 PM

I edited it with genre seperation :thumb:

dsmith85 10-15-2004 03:05 PM

Right now I can't get past Sum 41, chuck is an awesome album and suggest it to everyone. The punk is still in the songs, and has a harder edge which is why this album is so complete.

Metalcore
Backstabbers Inc. - Metalcore, grindcore, or something in between. Chaotic mess. Yum.
Beauty To Ashes - Metalcore and hardcore. A mix of the greats. “Bystanderds of a Lifestyle Obession”
Beecher - Great, fast metalcore band from the UK. The screamer is a little high though. “Arrow Flies”
Between The Buried And Me - Legends. If you like metalcore but don’t have any BBAM, get some, NOW!
Bleeding Through - Remind me of Martyr AD in a way. Not very unique, they’d probably remind you of a lot of metalcore bands. They‘re still good at what they do though. “Sweet Vampirous” “Number Seven With A Bullet”
Blood Has Been Shed - If I’m not mistaken, the singer of Killswitch Engage screams for this band. But fear not, no melody hear. Just full on metalcore, with some great screaming. “Technicolor Jackets”
Blood Runs Cold - For fans of Every Time I Die. “Broken Bond”
Bloody Sunday - Fast, gritty metalcore.
Born From Pain - A heavier Blood For Blood.
Breather Resist - For fans of Norma Jean. “The best Mistake”
Bridge To Solace - A GREAT blend of punk and metal. Talent, speed, some melodic sections, a great, great band. They have unique (meaning made for the band) speaking parts and the beginning or end of each song. which are all very well done. They are done by someone in Pennywise, I believe. “How Long Do We Have To Bear Our ****ing Crosses” “Death Race With Dimension Four”
Burning Skies - Overall a generic but good metalcore band. “Individual Hate Complex”
Bury Your Dead - For fans of Dead To Fall’s new album.

Emo
Bright Blue Calm - The quiet-to-loud dynamic characteristic to emo. Great stuff. “Color Pallet”

Metal
Beyond The Embrace - They sound kind of like Children Of Bodom, but without the keytar. I love the signer/screamer. Great/good solos too. “Insect Song” “Reedemer”
Blind Guardian - In my opinion, the Flogging Molly or Dropkick Murphys of metal.

Ska
Bandits Of The Acoustic Revolution - Ska. I’ve been told they’re a Streetlight Manifesto but with acoustic guitars. “Here’s To Life”
Big D And The Kids Table - The Gypsy Hill EP is my favorite ska album ever. A great mix of ska and punk. “Scenester” “Those Kids Suck” “Check List”

Pop-punk
Bayside - Pop-punk without a whiny singer omgwtf. A harder edge in some songs than most pop-punk. “Masterpeice” “Phone Call From Poland”
Before Brail - Mellow and quiet to melodic pop-punk. Sweet. “When Feeling Fades”
Before I Go - A bit of harder edge, but not much. Non-whiny singers with a bit of a rasp. “Again I Follow Suit”
Before Today - Pop-punk with some post-hardcore influence. They have a LOT of a talent for a pop-punk band. Check the metal-esque solo in “Roots Beneath Ideals” and the melodic greatness of “Pierce The Evil”
Belvedere - Fast pop-punk. Not usually what I listen to, so I can’t make comparisons. “Repetition, Rejection”
Best Interest - It’s a shame these guys have only released an EP. It’s genius though. A great blend of melodic singing and screaming,. A good bit of talent as well. “True Evol”
Better Luck Next Year - Light, care free pop-punk. More talented than the average as well. “Winning What’s Left”
Blueline Medic - Nice, melodic pop-punk.
Burns Out Bright - Not the best produced of bands, but great melody and some good guitar work (for pop-punk) “Something I Can Steal”

Indie and Mellow
Bear Vs. Shark - Indie and post-hardcore. A great blend of singing and screaming. “Ma Jolie” (just note that they aren’t mellow for the most part)
Beauty Pill - Beautiful mellow, mellodic indie. “Nancy Medly, Girl Genius, Age 15”
Before Brail - Mellow and quiet to melodic pop-punk. Sweet. “When Feeling Fades”
Blonde Red Head - Like Rilo Kiley, but less Folk-y.
Brazil - Any fan of melody and unique-ness should give a listen.

Post-Hardcore
Bear Vs. Shark - Indie and post-hardcore. A great blend of singing and screaming. “Ma Jolie”
Before Today - Pop-punk with some post-hardcore influence. They have a LOT of a talent for a pop-punk band. Check the metal-esque solo in “Roots Beneath Ideals” and the melodic greatness of “Pierce The Evil”
Beloved - I wasn’t sure where to put these guys. Beautiful melodic singing to heavy guitars and one of my favorite screamers. “Death To Traitors” “Failure On My Lips”
Best Interest - It’s a shame these guys have only released an EP. It’s genius though. A great blend of melodic singing and screaming,. A good bit of talent as well. “True Evol”
Bleed The Dream - They have some Alternative influence as well. Great singer. “Overcrowded Room”
Blue Skies At War - A little quiet, but nonetheless good. “Looking Back”
Blueprint Car Crash - A good amount of talent in these guys. A weird singer though. “12.8.80”
Broken Horizon - A talented band, with a great singer and a great singer. Mixes great heavy riffs with a beautiful singer. Lyrics are lame, but the music is great. “My Bleeding Heart” “Loses”

Hardcore
Beauty To Ashes - Metalcore and hardcore. A mix of the greats. “Bystanderds of a Lifestyle Obession”
Blacklisted - I’d be tempted to call them metalcore, but I wont. Fast, heavy, what more could you want?

Acoustic
Bleed The Dream - They have an all-acoustic EP which is very good, so I’ll just put them here as well. Anything off the album “Asleep”

Defy Genre
Big Dumb Face - Some kind of metal and synth mix, but hardly nintendocore. They have all their voices synthed and distorted, very odd. “Rebel” “Mighty ***** Lazer”

cbmartinez 10-16-2004 08:03 AM

/no life ++

Bleed The Dream should be under emocore or metalcore also. Awesome list. Breather Resist <3

Happymeal 10-16-2004 08:30 AM

Maybe we should do a "recommended artist of the week" or something. Most of the bands on the list are probably gonna be ignored anyway..

Super Flying Turbo Ninja 10-17-2004 11:14 AM

Wow, thanks guys. I will check some of these out very soon. :thumb:

PDWAB 10-17-2004 01:38 PM

Man, I knew we'd run out of space but I didn't think it'd be this soon! This is just a heads up, as the list grows your post may be edited. It's shouldn't be that big of a deal seeing the content of your post is still there, it's just part of a list, but you might want to save your lists just in case. (Sorry chump)

Mellophobia_90 10-20-2004 02:52 AM

butitznotfair18 11-02-2004 03:46 PM

the most awsome pop-punk band (to me anyway) is sum 41. there new album is not what i expected tho.at first i hated it becauses it wasnt there regular stuff but it grows on ya i guess but wut makes me mad is that there not comming here on their tour!!!

QuiMAgeN 11-04-2004 01:37 AM

I know this is a "Pop-Punk" Sub-forum, but I was wondering if anyone knew some good bands/songs (whether it be emo/alternative/metal/rock/etc) that uses the piano well. Kinda a weird question I know, but I think that songs/bands that can effectively incorporate the the piano into their songs (Trains done it, Journey, Straylight Run's "Existentialism," etc.) sounds totally different and seem to blend more styles into one. Maybe its just me, but I love it. So if you guys/girls have any good suggestions/recommendations... for sure post them. Thanks

BridgeToSolace 11-04-2004 02:38 PM

Metal (powermetal)- Sonata Arctica. The song to check out by them is "The Cage". Some amazing keyboard. Children of Bodom as well.

Desert City Soundtrack and The Dredson Dolls are both just drums and piano. (mostly)

Nevea Tears is an emocore band that uses a keyboard in all of their songs...suggested song is Helium Queen.

Those are the only bands I can currently think of that use them in all songs.

You should definatly check out Desert City Soundtrack, if anything.
