The Dark Side of the Forum (Pink Floyd)

Pink Floyd were arguably one of the more infuential bands of the '60s, '70s and even today. This thread is for discussion of all things Floyd, and also the solo projects of the members. A great site for learning about Floyd is here.

For a great article, written by the forum's own Med57, read this.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many of the regulars of this thread often write interpretations of the albums Pink Floyd have released. These collaborations will be listed below, so that even the most casual Floyd fan can get an idea of the stories and concepts behind the albums. New users are welcome to join in, just wait until either Lunch998, MalcolmYoungRock or myself call for nominations for the album. Once the album is decided, each person can dibs a song. Then, you have around two weeks to write the analysis of the lyrics of the song. We are still debating whether the instrumental side should also be considered... :)

Hmm...well where to start...Floyd is amazing. The part in Comfortable Numb that goes "Is there anybody in there?" was kinda eerie the first time I heard the song.

JonG 10-12-2004 08:06 PM

Time is the greatest Pink Floyd song, amazing piece of artwork, DSOTM is. Took 1 n a half years to make 9 songs. Money is the most known, but it is a very great song, The raggity sax and the guitar after makes me get pumped :P

As for Comfortably Numb, it's alright, I'm not the biggest fan, Wish You Were Here has great vocals and Run Like Hell is one of their best instrumentals. I also like Welcome To Machine.

lunch998 10-12-2004 08:06 PM

My favorite album of theirs is Animals. I guess it isn't haunting, but its dark, very serious, and the music is amazing. Great lyrics throughout the album, too.

Kingofdudes 10-12-2004 08:09 PM

Comfortably Numb is great on the "Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live: 1980-81" CD. I havent heard anything off of Delicate Sound of Thunder, but im downloading Time and Comfortably Numb off of it now.

I own dis fred k?

TheFlying-V 10-12-2004 08:09 PM

wish you were here and animals

Kingofdudes 10-12-2004 08:22 PM

Time was meh on that CD, but Comfortably Numb was awesome

ledfloyd_fan 10-12-2004 08:39 PM

Comfortably Numb was also great on PULSE. Which do you think is better, Dogs or Shine ony you Crazy Diamond? I'd say Dogs, but WYWH is my favorite floyd cd.

Kingofdudes 10-12-2004 08:43 PM

Dogs for me, it is probably my favorite Pink Floyd song :)

Riva 10-12-2004 09:04 PM

I prefer Shine On You Crazy Diamond, though Dogs is also very up there.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 10-12-2004 10:12 PM

Oh ****!!! Sorry about that

vecter1212 10-13-2004 12:00 AM

Syd was insane, never get tired of comfortably numb btw.

Riva 10-13-2004 01:56 AM

Hey, I was listening to a tape of Ummagumma; and in Several Small Species of Mammal Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict, is there supposed to be a background hum, or is it just the tape? Because it fits in well, but it sounds out of style, if you know what I mean.

#1 Floyd Fan

Pink Floyd has been my favourite band for ages. Picking a fave song however would be like asking somebody to choose between their children. The Wall is the best by far in my estimation, with DSOTM a close second. I think hauntingly I would go with Hey You. :thumb:

angus_young_wannabe 10-13-2004 03:25 AM

Brain damage has fairly haunting lyrics, talking about insanity and whatnot.

I have been listening to Pink Floyd a lot over the past few months and with every cd I am continually blown away. A truly amazing band. Favourite song at the moment would have to be Dogs, the middle section is just brilliant and the harmonized guitar solos are one of the best. But one song I never see mentioned anywhere is Fearless off Meddle. It would definately have to be one of the best songs off that album apart from the obvious, echoes. anyone else agree?

anyway enough of my rambling its great to see another pink floyd thread, there hasnt been one for a while.

toolboy84 10-13-2004 03:26 AM

I like WYWH and DSOTM the most, also The Wall.

The solo from Time is amazing, and Comfortably Numb is a brilliant song. Also Wish You Were Here is an amazing song.

Diatonic Dissonance™ 10-13-2004 03:29 AM

Not much of a Pink Floyd fan, some of their stuff is okay though.

LiZZySkYnRd7^ 10-13-2004 03:30 AM

I think Roger Waters is a brilliant lyricist, but David is essential also and I tend to teeter back and forth in my affections. But at the end of the day, it has to be Waters. I hoped for a David sighting on Denmark street in London, he gets all his instruments there and lives in Kensington where I stayed for months. Not one siting, I sound stalker- ish.

BurnLikeABlackNight 10-13-2004 04:04 AM

I prefer Gil to Waters. His voice has a better tone to it or something and he plays a mean guitar.

LiZZySkYnRd7^ 10-13-2004 04:17 AM

Hmmm yes, He is a brill guitarist, BUT.......Waters is the lyricist and THE MAN. :thumb:

Riva 10-13-2004 04:35 AM

Roger Waters and David Gilmour are both integral parts of the band.

LiZZySkYnRd7^ 10-13-2004 04:38 AM

Well, as I said.......David is essential :) ..........I hear they are going to be getting back together for a tour........

BoboTheRagingHobo 10-13-2004 04:58 AM

Lryical and vocal wise, I have to say The Wall and The Final Cut are both very haunting albums. They are both very cynical as well, which adds a whole new spin to the feeling the music puts off.

Pink Floyd is one of my favorite bands and will stay like that for a long long time...

Riva 10-13-2004 05:14 AM

I am getting The Wall DVD for my 18th, hopefully!! Only a week and a bit and I will be able to see what my friend said was the trippiest video of his lifetime.

BurnLikeABlackNight 10-13-2004 05:22 AM

The Wall is a really good movie but without the music its not the best. The story is interesting but if it wasn't with Floyds music behind it it would be shite. The cartoons rule(walking muff??) aswell as all mad shit with the fascists.

But i still gotta watch the wizard of oz with the wall. Supposedly it fits perfectly together as a sound track.

MasterofPie 10-13-2004 05:27 AM

^^ Don't you mean DSotM with The Wizard of Oz and yeah it does synchronize(I forget how to spell it) if you start the cd the THIRD time the MGM lion roars.
