(Rap/Punk) Transplants – Transplants

(Rap/Punk) Transplants – Transplants

This band is a side project from Tim Armstrong of Rancid, with Travis Barker (Blink 182) on drums and fairly new Rob Aston providing vocals, usually rap.

So, Punk, eh? Some may say it is stagnating, getting boring. This band then, is at least in concept, trying something new.

Now, onto the track reviews, shall we

Romper Stomper - Starts of with a ‘heavier’ riff, and Rob Aston provides aggressive vocals

Tall Cans In the Air – Another song with lots of rap, yet more typical Transplants style than ‘Romper Stomper’

DJ, DJ – A party song of sorts, this song is the first vocal contribution from Tim, and features a ‘solo’ from Tim, which is quite good (gets flamed by metal heads)

Diamonds and Guns - The first single of the album, this is quite a good song. The piano during the song adds a cool effect, and features some random other guy on vocals (rapping)

Quick Death – My favourite song on the album. This song has Davey Havock (A.F.I) and Rob Aston rapping/shouting, and Davey’s vocals add a good feel to the song

Sad but True – Sounds a bit like a Rancid song. I think that Aston saves this song from being a bit boring, but yeah, it’s easy to hear Rancid in this song.

Weigh On My Mind – Features Brody Armstrong (Distillers) on backup vocals, adding a ‘bit of soul’ to the song, but the actual music is quite boring

One Seventeen – Typical Punk Rock. Aggressive, Fast, what Punk should be. One of Tim’s best vocal contributions on the album

California Babylon – I guess you could call this song ‘rock n’ roll’, this song is pretty average. It’s got a pretty catchy guitar part, and Tim’s vocals are quite good, with Aston’s fitting in well

We Trusted You – I can see this as a Rancid song, but that’s to be expected, but it’s also quite good. But, yeah, typical Rancid stuff, sounds like something of ‘Indestructible’

D.R.E.A.M – The least typical song on the album, a rap song, straight forward, but don’t hold that against it, it’s good. My second favourite song on the album, actually.

Down in Oakland – An okay song, slightly menacing :p

All in all ,this album isn’t as bad as it’s made out to be, but need to be more exciting in some areas

4/5

I agree that it's not very exciting, but I like the fact that Tim Armstrong is actually trying to do something different instead of the same old punk stuff. The piano in Diamonds and Guns is cool.

It's like they've created a whole new genre. I cannot hold anything against a band that dares to be creative, and succeeds.

j_hop_jer 11-19-2003 10:20 PM

At first i though The Transplants was soooo stupid. and yea. after i listened to 'romper stomper' i was gona just never listen again then the next song came on and that one has to be one of the best(well that and'sad but true' and 'weight on my mind') but other then that its OK. i dont like how tim's solos are just ringing notes and sutch(well usally) and yea all and all pretty good 4 and a half outa 5

I personally hated the rap in the whole album. The songs were fine until Rob starts rapping.

It might seem a bit biased because I hate rap with a passion.

rancidpunk 02-17-2004 10:33 AM

I think it was an okay album.3/5 but howcome you said DJ-DJ was the first song with a vocal contribution from tim? he sings in tall cans in the air.......

brycey 02-17-2004 12:08 PM

I didn't like The Transplants at first, but after hearing "Diamonds And Guns" a lot, I started to like them. :)

I still need to get the album though.

RollerQueen 02-17-2004 12:59 PM

A pretty decent album and it IS kinda innovative, but even if rap-punk was a genre already, this probably wouldn't have been a "best in show" album. 3/5.

Jobbymann182 02-17-2004 01:34 PM

I really liked the album. I have to say when i bought it i wasnt sure wot i would get from it, and when i heard romper stomper i wasnt impressed but when i heard tall cans in the air i feel in love with the song and then the rest of the album was very good.

collectersedition 03-09-2004 06:16 AM

Transplants are pretty good... many good songs on this album... and a couple of not so good songs... buy this album..

Hot Rats 03-10-2004 09:31 AM

At least they were creative, they just could have tried harder. 2/5

thursdaythrice 03-11-2004 06:11 PM

meh they tried being creative but they failed, its the same boring rap rock crap, and sold dj dj or diamons or guns to a shampoo comercial how punx is that

guitarded_chuck 03-14-2004 03:33 PM

The rap ruins it.

pedro durruti 03-14-2004 10:50 PM

This is a really interesting combo that I would like to check out

I play a squier 03-14-2004 10:55 PM

i think this combination of rap/rock/punk is better than linkin park's combination of rap/rock :)

slim thugga 03-15-2004 11:00 AM

I like them. Good review. My favorite song is probably Quick Death.

blinkrancid41 07-11-2004 10:15 PM

as you can tell, i'm a fan of tim armstrong and travis barker, so that's what made me give the transplants a listen. lars frederiksen from rancid sings backup on we trusted you which i'm sure made that seem even more like a rancid song than it did already. matt freeman, davey havok, and brody armstrong (tim's wife) all make cameos as well.
3.5/5

cbmartinez 07-12-2004 04:15 PM

I love Quick Death feat. Davey Havok. It's one of my favorite songs. California Babylon, Tall Cans In The Air and Diamonds and Guns are great too.

PunkPopMix6859 07-17-2004 07:40 PM

I give it a 1.9/5

AfroMan 07-18-2004 12:04 PM

This is a great album!

Packed full of great songs with a refreshing new style. It's good to see a band like this in a music industry that lacks creativity. Quick Death is the worst song on the album but apart from that, everything else is worth checking out.

BasShorty 09-28-2004 07:04 AM

me like this cd.

Ganondorf 09-28-2004 09:11 AM

yay, ressurected :D

Mekkalayakay 09-28-2004 04:09 PM

Meh. Diamonds and Guns is cool, and I do respect that they have a different sound, but I just didn't really like the album.

2.5/5

Iai 09-28-2004 04:45 PM

Agree totally with Mekka. Except for Diamonds And Guns being cool. To my ears it sounds like the worst Buck 65 song ever.

AmericanWeiner 11-04-2004 09:35 PM

I just wanted to comment that I like their style a lot, but the album sounds like crap. They could have done a much better job in the studio. Davey's voice in Quick Death sounds out of place and sampled.

The rest of the cd has a few vocal flubs, but it's overall a good cd. Nothing too innovative, like people are making it out to be, but fun nonetheless.

I LOVED IT! I can't wait for the new album to come out next year. :thumb:

cbmartinez 01-06-2005 08:02 PM

I felt the need to bump this and say that though I do like "Romper Stomper," it sounds almost exactly like a Linkin Park song.

drum_player4life1 01-06-2005 09:31 PM

:thumb: Recommend this CD pretty good one! Very original and unique!
