Clutch (Gearheads Unite!)

How many people have heard of this band? They seem to be pretty popular in the underground scene, and they've even had some radio play. Still, they are generally unknown.

For those of you who don't know who they are, Clutch is a band from Maryland. Formed in 1991, they are comprised of Neil Fallon (Vocals and guitar), Tim Sult (Guitar), Dan Maines (Bass), Jean-Paul Gaster (Drums), and following the release of Robot Hive/Exodus, Mick Schauer (Keyboards).

Their music is a combination of stoner metal, blues/southern rock, some funk elements, and a heavy dose of good ol' rock and roll. Their sound is tight and unique, and they have good lyrics. Neil's lyrics are intelligent, playing on words and making references to mythology, religion, history, and popular culture. Often times making for some good humor.

I highly suggest that whoever hasn't heard Clutch before check out their CD Blast Tyrant or Robot Hive/Exodus.

Still, I wonder how a band as talented as these guys isn't better known.

they were on viva la bam. good band but bams is so gheyyy

DanD 05-06-2007 01:15 PM

i think that there is already a Clutch thread floating around somewhere, but anyway, I love Clutch, except I cannot get into the new album. It just doesn't do it for me.

DaTwig 05-06-2007 02:30 PM

The new album is very different. Very bluesy, but I like it, though not as much as I love Blast Tyrant.

Still, there's some good songs on it. I really think Electric Worry is one of the best songs they've put out.

jrowa001 05-06-2007 03:00 PM

yay for clutch. i love this band and most people that i talk to have no idea who they are until i tell them about the viva la bam episode they were in, then they are like oh i remember...they were awesome!!

their new album is growing on me, im really diggin it right now. blast tyrant is my fav and rh/e is pretty killer too. neil fallon is one of my fav songwriters and lyricist. cool thread

Static 05-06-2007 03:06 PM

Haven't heard much, but decent band.

DaTwig 05-06-2007 06:35 PM

Never saw them on Viva La Bam, prolly cause I watched one episode of it and hated it. I did know he directed their video for "The Mob Goes Wild." It even has Ryan Dunn in it.

Either way, I love that song. Me and my brother's band did a cover of it for my school's battle of the bands.

That's a ridiculous statement.

DaTwig 05-06-2007 06:38 PM

How so?

Kage 05-06-2007 06:38 PM

Talent and level of popularity are in no way related.

DaTwig 05-06-2007 06:45 PM

True. Though it wouldn't be a bad thing, would it? :p

I just think these guys should be better known. Even here on Sputnik they don't get much love, and this was the website that introduced me to more obscure and underground bands.

Kage 05-06-2007 06:46 PM

Yeah I think there are a few users around here who really like them. I've heard a little and was disappointed.

DaTwig 05-06-2007 06:49 PM

Dissapointed?

I mean, I know they aren't the most mind blowing or technical band around, but I still think they're great songwriters. They still manage to sound original with each record and never get repetitive. Plus, I love Neil Fallon's lyrics.

Kage 05-06-2007 06:49 PM

Well I had heard a bunch of hype and my only thought when hearing it was

"is this all?"

DaTwig 05-06-2007 06:51 PM

Ah, I could see that. Granted, I could be one of the ones responsible for overhyping this band, but that's just because they're one of my favorites. I just think they're a great, solid rock and roll band. And I love the blues influence.

Out of curiousity, do you remember what you heard by them?

AA-12 05-06-2007 07:33 PM

Blast Tyrant is a classic album.

Txus 05-06-2007 09:26 PM

The new album is quite amazing.

DaTwig 05-07-2007 04:39 PM

The new album is actually growing on me. Not quite what I expected, but its pretty darn good. Still, Blast Tyrant is my favorite.

I'm curious, what's everyone's favorite album of theirs? I hear Blast Tyrant alot, but there's still some who think Robot Hive/Exodus blows it out of the water.

TojesDolan 05-07-2007 04:55 PM

I need to listen to this fellas

Mexican Bandito 05-07-2007 04:56 PM

yes you do quite frankly

TojesDolan 05-07-2007 05:25 PM

I'll try and find a blog, otherwise I'll come back begging for an upload.

blast tyrant just barely edges over RH/E as the majority favorite. pure rock fury is pretty good too (but its kinda hard to get over the so so production in their earlier releases)

DanD 05-07-2007 08:26 PM

i uploaded Elephant Riders and Blast Tyrant to the Daily Upload, but they haven't been sent yet or something.

i suppose if you want the links from me you could hit me up on aim or whatever

Shred Danson 05-07-2007 08:30 PM

I prefer a lot of Clutch's earlier work, but then again I have yet to hear Robot Hive/Exodus. I heard a little bit of the new CD and thought it was pretty good, but I'll have to give it all another listen.

DaTwig 05-08-2007 01:49 PM

How old are you talking? Cuase if you're talking about their first CD I'm pretty surprised. Their sound as definitely ripened with age.

Still, though the sound is completely different, I like some of the stuff off "Transnational Speedway League." Mostly, A Shogun Named Marcus, Binge and Purge, and Rats. Though the last one is definitely a strange track.
