50 tube watts is bloody loud, you should have no problem completely drowning out the drummer with that wattage.

if its 50 watts solidstate, it should be enough, yeah. unless you have a shitty amp with a cheap poweramp (often the case with high wattage solidstate amps) that clips when you turn it up at all.

i can't say much about peavey tho, i havent any experience with their amps apart from their classic series amps (classic series amps are loud as hell)

it depends really. contrary to popular belief, the drummer doesn have to play ungodly loud everytime he plays.

No.

It all depends how hard your drummer hits. Jamming with just a drummer, my Peavey Bandit (80W SS) was going to the limit. With a full band, i've played 100W - 150W SS, also going to the limit. I personally wouldn't use an SS amp with a live band (excluding quiet gigs like Jazz bands:P) unless it was at least 200-300W.

With tube amps its different. 5w could probably hold its own, but it'd be hard to keep any clean tones happening. I never go above 50w - I jammed with a Single Recto, barely even touching halfway; had I nudged that volume knob I could have obliterated the drummer.

Yes, PA systems are usually a lot higher than any guitar amp, because of what they need to be able to handle. If your guitar amp has more wattage than the PA, the PA isn't good enough for the gig :p

It should be fine.
But if you are having troubles keeping up, try picking your amp up onto a chair or a table.

Having the speakers point towards your ears will make it sound louder than what it would be when pointing towards your shins.

Huh? MY 5 W amp through a 2x12 is louder than my other guitarists like 50 W SS.

Yeah well. Watts alone is no real good way to determine loudness.
Don't worry too much about it.

Efficiency of speakers determine the output more so than the wattage or size.

Most 50 watt amps are plenty loud enough. Especially for the basement or garage.
What kind of amp are you looking at or do you have. If its a Marshall MG50, its plenty loud.(They have fan problems, though).

idk, I had a rage 158 which was like 15 watts, it was loud enough to play over a drummer.

MGs suck man...the amount of people who have them were im from and the amount of times they have had to have them repaired orjust got rid of them is ungodly lol

my preference wud have to be Vox...i currently have a Vox AC 30 and, obviously, i have no problem over powering the drummer...but for practice i use a 50W Vox Valvetronix..we have headphone monitors so we can always hear what we are doing:D

valvetronix amps are really nice, i love the way they sound. not to reliable tho, mine has broken three times :(

my very first amp was an mg, and apart form it sounding really bad, i never had a problem with it breaking or anything, haha.
