Top Instrumental and Post-Rock Bands

I would say my top bands would be Grails, Mono and Pelican.

Grails really caught my attention this past year. Everything they have done is great, I love how they use so many different instruments. They change up middle eastern influences to blues to Latin, it's all over the place. For the softer side I would say Mono is the best there is. The orchestra on the new album is beautiful. Pelican doesn't really fit the post rock label they tend to get. They kind of have their own blend of riffs and atmosphere, I guess they will just get the Post-Metal label. They ruled live with Isis, just caught them last week. I'm loving the Geometry of Murder cover from Earth. Speaking of Earth I guess we can list Drone bands, it's closely related in some cases.

There's already a Post Rock thread.

Meatplow 06-09-2009 03:25 PM

does Electronic Music count because arguably the computer is an instrument

botb 06-09-2009 03:27 PM

Russian Circles owns all three of the mentioned OP bands.`other than maybe pelican

Bleekill 06-09-2009 03:32 PM

I disagree, Grails is much more interesting to me and Russian Circles. I'm talking about instrumental rock meatplow.

Which brings me to mention the Bakerton Group. El Rojo is a great album for the summer.

3nd is the best instrumental (not quite) post rock band out there. I recommend you all check out their mini-album View From Here as it's superb.

As far as actual post-rock goes, my favorites are Yndi Halda, 65daysofstatic and Caspian. It's a very subjective genre though and everybody seems to have their own favorites.

And in terms of instrumental rock that's not post-rock at all, Natsumen>every band out there

SlightlyEpic 06-09-2009 03:53 PM

Adebisi Shank!

Moon Flavor 06-09-2009 03:54 PM

hate that band

SlightlyEpic 06-09-2009 03:54 PM

Seriously? Why? It's so fun.

Txus 06-09-2009 04:27 PM

My favorite would be Godspeed You! Black Emperor but I don't see them as post rock that much tbh

so then I have to agree with Grails, the band is outsantding.

Thank god no one has said EITS yet.

SKUDstorm 06-09-2009 04:46 PM

best band is definitely EITS

Ventriloquist 06-09-2009 04:47 PM

Crippled Black Phoenix, Red Sparowes, GY!BE/A Silver mt. Zion, 65daysofstatic, God is an Astronaut, Mono, Mogwai, This Will Destroy You, The Non

These are the best post-rock bands I can think of. My favorite is Crippled Black Phoenix.

SKUDstorm 06-09-2009 04:51 PM

sweek is a really great post-rock band

horseypie 06-09-2009 04:52 PM

i could never get into EITS or G!YBE at all. probably the only other post rock band ive listened to and enjoyed would be mono.
but for me sigur ros is the best bar none

Jaundice 06-09-2009 04:52 PM

gtfo with all this post rock and focus on top instrumentals.

cluster is one of the greatest bands of all time amirite?

Ventriloquist 06-09-2009 04:54 PM

Way too many good instrumental bands. Needs a separate thread. I think it already exists.

imperialblackness 06-09-2009 05:18 PM
didnt say they were, and i just went by the thread name since its top instrumental and post-rock. not just post-rock

Shattered_Future 06-09-2009 11:33 PM

I saw Mono when they played one of 2 dates in the US with an orchestra. Maybe it was an off night, or maybe it was because I was worried about my girlfriend who wasn't feeling well, but for whatever reason they were really bad. It also could have been they were turned up to the point that you couldn't distinguish anything, and that it was entirely static.

MBS 06-09-2009 11:51 PM

mono is pretty good, i like aphasia and explosions in the sky

forgot to mention mogwai and god is an astronaut

McP3000 06-09-2009 11:54 PM

i think mogwai and GIAA are both pretty meh

Bleekill 06-09-2009 11:54 PM

I would love to see Mono live. Mogwai is pretty good. I still need to get that newest album.
