Hiphop for a metalhead?
Hey people, I'm a metalhead (mostly prog) but I want to widen my view on music so I decided to start listening to other genres and hiphop seems to pull me right now. Does anyone know a few good albums to start with? I saw Kendrick Lamar's album was rated best of 2015, but I don't realy know how hiphop albums are rated so I don't know if it's a good thing to start with or not.
Any ideas? |

check out: Saul Williams - The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust

Death Grips in their Exmilitary and The Money Store era is pretty easy to transition to from metal, and I'd like to think that good kid, m.A.A.d city as well as My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy are really easy to get.

I wouldn't really recommend anything post-NLDW for Death Grips tho, partially because of a decline in quality, partially because it's mostly a departure from their punk influence since Stefan takes a backseat more often than before.

their most recent album is the first to feature live guitars and stefan is front and center. theres no departure from their punk inlfuences, they've just added more into the pot. |
I mean I did say decline in quality, plus it's not like there's three albums released after NLDW that fit the "departure from their punk influence" portion of that response.

Since you know, Government Plates, Niggas on the Moon, and Fashion Week are all undeniably influenced the least by any derivative of punk. Jenny Death isn't particularly representative of the general core of the Government Plates-TPTB stretch.

As long as you watch or have watched Fresh Prince of Bel Air, you should at least appreciate this...

I would suggest stuff like:
Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks, La Coka nostra, Necro, Non Phixion |

I listen to a lot of death metal and shit. But recently I've been listening to a lot of Earl Sweatshirt. Mac Lethal is good, too. Maybe even check out Atmosphere.
That's just me though. |

Man just listen to Illmatic, that's the album that really got me into hip hop and it's a great gateway for pretty much anybody. I'm a metalhead too (primarily anyway)
|
Yeah, that's a good shout.
I reckon you'll dig Beastie Boys - Ill Communication, too. It's got huge crossover appeal. I'm pretty sure you've heard this, right?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4PN7Xbexq4 |
