Hurray! Converting is so much fun.

On a side note, so irritated someone else got the next FA before I got my act together. There's only one artist I could justice to, and I'm terrified someone else will do them and I won't get to have a go.

[/pointless rant]

br3ad_man 09-07-2004 05:48 PM

I want to do another one.

Doing mine was fun :)

blueyxd 09-07-2004 07:37 PM

reading a local street press just now... I see he is playing a gig here next month.. I've never heard any of his stuff but he is obviously well liked, so I might go if its not too much $.
It's at a local pub, which seems strange as the next night he's playing at a theater, and that costs $50 - too much for my liking.

dans107 09-08-2004 03:50 AM

Go!

I'm yet to see him live :upset:

br3ad_man 09-08-2004 03:55 AM

I have to miss it because its over 18. Oh well...4 sleeps till Muse :D

dans107 09-08-2004 03:35 PM

Now, I know it's a Damien Rice thread (to make it worse my Damien Rice thread) - but Muse are the best live band you'll see!

Anyway, I really, really want to see Mr Rice live...I missed him at Leeds in '03, I didn't even know he was playing :upset:

Spectrum 09-08-2004 08:25 PM

Man, I would love to see him live... do we know if he's coming to the New England area any time soon? I live in Southern Maine, and the Boston/Portland area is my main staging area for venues. I have only seen Creed and Blue Man Group (incredible show) live, and am aching for more. Why not go see Damien Rice?

Any info.?

Surely it'll tell you on his website?
Surely it'll tell you on his website?
^You'll have to forgive Mike. He's not that smart.

Spectrum 09-08-2004 09:19 PM

Man, all of his September and October Shows are in Ireland and Australia.

Which figures, 'cause he's Irish and not actually from here and can do that...

Poo.
but Muse are the best live band you'll see!
Muse are about the 67th best live band I've seen.

dans107 09-09-2004 03:35 PM

That's pretty accurate.

Meh, in my opinion, they're one of the best live bands out there.

Anyway, there's an album out with Damien Rice b-sides on - don't suppose anyone's seen it in the shops?

Nope, only seen it on the website.

The Ashtray Girl 09-11-2004 06:01 AM

^It's definitely out in the UK, I have admired it.

dans107 09-13-2004 04:38 AM

Now would be a good time to post a new FA :)

Bartender 09-13-2004 09:09 AM

GurS has the next one, I think.

lilpete86 09-13-2004 12:07 PM

I finally bought O today after having it in mp3 for a couple of months

GurS 09-13-2004 03:18 PM

i shall have mine up (hopefully) tomorrow night

The Ashtray Girl 09-14-2004 12:20 PM

Ooh the tension.

denboy 09-15-2004 09:43 AM

Am I the only one who find Damien Rice's music a little.... ... ... ... Plain?.. And boring?..
Is it just me?
Everyone else seems to love his music

Tapeworm 09-15-2004 11:02 AM

And they may just have a reason to love it.

denboy 09-16-2004 10:13 AM

I don't doubt that. I'm just asking because it seems like I'm the only one that "don't get it"

Spectrum 09-16-2004 10:17 AM
I don't doubt that. I'm just asking because it seems like I'm the only one that "don't get it"
I don't find Damien's music to be plain. For one thing, he puts a lot of emotion and feeling and intensity into his songs, which ups the quality of them significantly. Secondly, half of the album "O" is rather avant garde, featuring such things as ringing glasses as percussion, a tribal-sounding guy choir, a bit of opera style, and a cellist as part of the main line-up. Part of the beauty of Damien Rice is that he can take simple things, and create what I consider wonderful songs. And he has a great and versatile voice to boot.

It also depends what kind of other music you're into. What are you into?

-Mike

denboy 09-16-2004 10:39 AM

I'm into everything... Hehe.. Well, I guess the reason I dislike his music is because I dislike his voice a bit. And find his music too simplistic

I guess I'll give his music a chance again someday.. Hehe

denboy 09-22-2004 12:04 PM

I am now officially converted..

Delicate, is an amazing, amazing song

Spectrum 09-22-2004 08:41 PM

I think it's awesome that he cried while performing it live. That just shows how much he puts into his music.

Yay! Another convert!

I once heard him do "Volcano" live, and it was awesome. If anyone is in the Boston area, 92.5 is a good station to listen to (in my opinion). They have a 1940's concert hall (the River Music Hall), where artists such as STP, Damien Rice, Donovan Frankenreiter (sp?), Gary Jules, John Mayer, BNL, Jamie Cullum and many more have performed live and unplugged. They play River Music Hall performances sometimes, and I believe they are being smart and putting out compilation albums of River Music Hall performances. The "Volcano" that was done there was an intense experience, especially during the vocal section at the end of the song. Hearing it done live was fantastic.

I talk too much.

Ok i get this thread is like totally dead now, and that i'm a newbie and probably silly for posting this in a dead thread...but you can but try.

What genre would you call Damien Rice?

Iai 04-04-2005 08:39 PM

Don't worry, it's cool.

Good question. I'd say pop, but most people seem to think of that as some sort of insult. I guess he'd be somewhere between alternative folk/rock, and sadcore.

Bartender 04-04-2005 08:43 PM

Yeah, don't worry about bumping old Featured articles or important threads, and things. just don't arbitrarily bump whatever you feel like.

Wow. I guess that clears up some things for me.

I'd put him as Indie, personally, considering he runs his own label. Alternative Folk/Rock and Sadcore are applicable, as well as Avant Garde ("Cheers Darling", "I Remember", and "Eskimo" in particular).
