I understand the frustration and I have a free ebook on my site that may help with building alternate picking across strings. This is a very difficult technique to master and sometimes may take longer than a year to fully master. I know this will be classed as necrophilia for bumping such an old thread but was hoping you guys could help me with a few dumb questions.

So first of, what should I be looking for when I buy a new head and cabinet? I'm hoping to get a band together in the next half a year and do some practising and if things go well, do some gigs. I'm going to be playing metal, like Chimaira for example - I watched a video on Rob Arnold's (their guitarist) setup and he said he has a Peavey 6505+ Head and a Mesa Cab. How do I know what to look for exactly in these sorts of things, are there certain things that I can see that would identify in something being better? I'd feel a bit dumb buying it, for someone to ask me "So what made you buy that" for me to reply "A guitarist I like has it".

Leading on from that, do head and cabs just work together or do certain heads only work with certain cabs and if so; how do I find this out?

Most heads work with most cabs because there are different outputs on the back of the heads with different ohm ratings to match the impedance of a variety of cabs.

As to what you should buy/why you should buy it, I'd first scout youtube for clips of different amp manufacturers and decide what sort of sound direction you want to go in. For example, the 6505 is a very full, crunchy sounding amp with average cleans. Mesa's tend to be very full sounding with glassy top end and cleans, and lots of bottom. Marshalls are very midrange based and have a distinct growl rather than a chug or whatever. Engl are very tight and focused sounding. There are loads out there, so just have a gander at youtube and see which you prefer.

As for cabs, the sound is affected by construction, materials and speakers. Orange cabs are built like tanks and weigh as much, so with a decent set of speakers it's one hell of a purchase. Marshall cabs are a bit meh (coming from a marshall fan) but I like the Mode 4, loads of tight low end. Vader and Avatar are non-major brand makes that do all sorts of variations and have great reputations. The speakers are usually Celestions, Vintage 30's, Greenbacks, or some variation of the G12's. V30's have a pronounced mid spike IMO, but can produce some excellent overtones. Once again, youtube it until you get the hang of what stuff sounds like.

Then go to a shop and try it. All the videos in the world won't tell you how a setup will react to your playing style.

Do you or anyone else have any reliable guides on understand Ohms, frequencies and such? I've had a look on Google and YouTube but lots of the things I find are either incredibly short or way to indepth.

TBH I'd suck it up and read the in depth one(s). Mis-matching the ohms on a valve head can lead to serious exploding. True story.

This is my app, it shows 6 chord tab fingerings for dozens of chord types for every root note. It may be helpful and is different enough from the other two listing you have under chords.
