Featured Artist #14: M83
M83
M83 are a duo from France who create interesting electronic music, often sounding simultaniously like Sigur Ros, Aphex Twin and My Bloody Valentine. In 2000, at just 20 years old, the two French lads decided to quit playing guitar music and to make music that was different. As the group put it, they decided to "look to the stars". Their name comes from the name of a distant galaxy and the group's sound reflects this. There is really not much information about the group's lives, and why should there be? There aren't many images of them readily avaliable because M83 are entirely focused on their music. There aren't many stories about their personal lives because, well, they are only in their early 20s. This is the stuff that aliens listen to in their cars, on the radio on their way to work. The group released their first album in 2001 on the Gooom label at just 21 years old. "Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts" was released in very late December 2003 (the 23rd). The album had only been finished earlier in the month. Critics often compare the group to bands such as My Bloody Valentine and Mogwai. The group say that until they read the comparisons to My Bloody Valentine, they had never even heard of the band. M83 have recently said that they have "freed themselves of all influences" for their second album, "Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts". In their latest record, however (to be released very soon), M83 seem to have gone back to the drawing board with influences and used as many different sounds as they can. The band's sound creates vivid images in the listener's head of vast landscapes. M83 now have three albums under their belt (their latest is soon to be released to the public) are still in their early/mid 20s. With no sign of creative juices running out, the future looks bright for M83. This fact alone gives us some idea of the amount of talent in this band. M83 have what so many other electronic artists forget to add to their sound: soul. Their songs are emotional and experimental at the same time. M83 are going from strength to strength. May they live long. Very nice.

~puts on 'Check Out' list~
Good work. |
Good work. I remember your(?) review of an M83 album, and it was also good. I never got around to checking them out, though.
|
Yeah, it was my review. Everyone said they would check them out but as far as I know, Happymeal was the only one who did. The only people on this site I know of who listen to them are myself, MAK and Scott Herren. We all like them.
|
Yeah. I would say (again) that I'd check them out, but it'd be something of an empty promise at the moment. I've already got plenty to look in to :-/
|
I've only heard 1 song but I like them already. I'll get all the albums when I get an iPod or a PSP soon:)
|
I am still yet to check these guys out. I definately shall now. Nice and easy. Well written too, very enjoyable.
|
Right, seeing as the whole dibs thing has got out of order (are we still using it even?) I'm announcing that I'm starting work on a new FA at the moment. Shouldn't be up for a good while yet though.
|
I can't believe that basically no one is checking them out. Everyone is doing themselves a disservice by not listening to these guys. It's not like it's hard either, all you have to do is go on to their website and type a few words to listen to them. I am yet to hear someone say that they don't like these guys. But whatever.
|
Ok, they just changed their site in the last few days. Anyone who wants to check them out (all 2 of you :( ), I'm hartwigandrew@gmail.com on MSN and br3ad_man on Soulseek.
|
they sound like a band i would really like. i am checking them out right now.
|
Yes!!! Another good song to check out is "Caresses" from their self titled album.

Ah, so that's you that's added me to MSN. You don't seem to be online, ever. Unless three MXicans have added and then blocked me in the past week or so, I think I'm having some kind of problem with MSN :( |
i downloaded car chase terror and caresses. they were both very lovely.
|
i didnt relise they had brought out 'Before The Dawn Heals Us', is it any good? i got hold of their first two and 'Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts' has become one of my favorite albums.
|
Dude!
This stuff owns life. I love the song unrecorded, it's been on repeat forever. Thank you for introducing me. :) |
No problem :)

You're hartwigandrew?!? Man, I figured that was some n00b from the Pit. I blocked you as soon as you were added. Anyway, the author of QuestionableContent reckons their new album is really bad. And he loved Dead Cities.... |
It's really different, that's why.
|
oh man.
i LOVE this band now. thank you soooooo much for introducing me. its amazing! :D:D:D |

Dead Cities is very nice, thanks for enlightening me.
|
I'm downloading Dead Cities from Iai right now...
|
great band.
actually i guess it's just a solo artist now.. but whatever, m83 is great. i think "before the dawn heals us" is a better album, but "run into flowers" is probably still my favorite song. edit: no, "gone" and "run into flowers" are tied. but the second album is still better as a whole... |
wow pictures looks very cool.

didn't the one guy leave before the latest album? i didn't know they had a self titled album though.. i should look into that. is it good? |
if you check the inside of the cover of "before the dawn heals us," all the compsing credits are for anthony gonazalez. he's on his own now, the other guy is doing solo work or something i heard.
|
didn't the one guy leave before the latest album?
i didn't know they had a self titled album though.. i should look into that. is it good?
Yeah, it's very good, just as good as Dead Cites and a bit better than the new one. On their label's website, it says that both Anthony and Nicholas are M83. |
"Though Before the Dawn Heals Us was recorded as a solo project by Gonzalez after the departure of collaborator Nicolas Fromageau, M83 will be repeating last fall's touring outfit as a four-piece."
That's from pitchfork. "Before the Dawn Heals Us" was done by m83 as a solo artist, but apparently they're back together for when they tour. Weird. |
Wierd indeed

When I first heard the name M83, I pictured some sort of hardcore/sceamo band for some reason. Anyway, I'ma check em out.
|
If no one objects can I do the next FA, a new one is needed
Thanks for the mp3s bread, btw. I like this kind of stuff |
Go for it. I doubt a new one will be up any time soon.
