Good amp for Ska/Punk band
My co-worker wants a new amp for his band. They are a ska/punk band, but they want something that is going to last for awhile. He needs crisp cleans and he's into Marshall type distortions/OD.
What are some good amps that have this sort of sound. Max would be $1000, but preferrable under $800. He plays through a Gibson LP. It also needs to be loud enough to hear at small to medium sized bars/clubs. |
why doesnt he get a marshall then? Or some sort of fender amp, like a HRD
|
Roland Jazzchorus + some overdrive pedal
Leftöver Crack uses JCs (well, and mesas but mesas arent very DIY). |

He's gonna look into them, but he wants other alternatives to look at and compare. I sold him a Fender amp awhile ago, but it was the FM100. Crappy *** amp. I may also sell him my Marshall vs100, which may be good for him, but again, he wants to know about other alternatives first. |

Id go for a JC120. They are loud, sounds great clean (good for ska rythm) and seems to be sturdy as hell.

cool, he's writing down a list of amps now, and I showed him this one on musiciansfriend.com It sounds like this amp has one of the better clean channels out there. Also, I could probably sell him my moddified DS-1 pedal that I don't use anymore, and he would have more than enough overdrive. |
Some sort of fender twin ?

JCM 2000. Don't know how much it costs. It's the best I've heard though.

DSL401
HRD /caps pwnd |
What type of ska is he playing? List some influences? There's a big difference between whether he's gonna be playing The Specials type stuff or Less Than Jake type stuff.

I'll ask him when he actually gets his *** into work today...
|
i play in a skacore band and all i can recommend is what i use - ashdown fallen angel
its not the metal amp its advertised as at all, and its perfect for that sound |
So he says not as fast as Less than Jake, but not as Reggae as the Specials... more like Reel Big Fish.

If you have opinions, then state them... I don't really care, but you're gonna sound like an idiot if you don't have solid proof for your reasoning. It's like if I were to say, N.Y.C. punk and L.A. punk is awesome, but all U.K. punk sucks balls. LOL... I may not like it personally, but at least I'm smart enough to know that the Sex Pistols, The Damned and the Subhumans were all great bands. |
