It's funny. I know a lot of advanced music theory, but I can't tell you a single instance where I used it to write a song.

Knowing modes, and scales and stuff has never really helped me to come up with an interesting riff.

Destroy All Girls 01-26-2011 04:43 AM

maybe you just have innate "feel"

APirate 01-26-2011 06:53 PM

technique is a must, especially with electronics

theory doesn't mean shit

Nepenthe 01-26-2011 06:55 PM

idk man i just make things sound good i don't pay any attention to 'techniques' or anything and i'm not trying to brag but i can make pretty legit sounding production

Destroy All Girls 01-26-2011 07:06 PM

you could take it to a whole new level if you wanted to

Bitchfork 01-26-2011 07:09 PM

I only use some minimal chord structure knowledge and take it from there with whatever I'm trying to express.

Nepenthe 01-26-2011 07:13 PM

nah dude i believe i will get to that whole new level on my own tbh. i become a little bit better each and every day just by constantly making music and figuring things out on my own.

you guys are really placing wayyy too much importance on it. almost to the point of just relying on it.

Larry Bird 01-26-2011 07:15 PM

ur not elying on enething

Nepenthe 01-26-2011 07:17 PM

relying on awesomeness

Destroy All Girls 01-26-2011 07:54 PM

only theory I know is reading music, root note stuff and basic harmony really.

I don't believe it's impossible but surely you could accelerate this process and further your understanding of it so much more if you learnt from people who've gone this road before.

Not like you have to take their word as law or anything, but the resource is there. It doesn't make sense to me not to at least consider the value of using it.

Nepenthe 01-26-2011 08:04 PM

i just feel like if i start thinking in terms of "this is how it's supposed to be done" it'll only start limiting me. like, i'm always finding new ways to do something or a new sound, way to create, whatever by just fucking around and saying "let's see what this does". when i say constantly making music i mean it, literally from the second i get home from work until i go to sleep i've got something that i'm playing around with.

idk i'm just more inclined to learning by doing than learning by reading about
