Heh, I guess I don't get the avatar then.

How about this for a suggestion; a thread perhaps a sticky that gives a list of albums, 10 perhaps from each genre/subgenre listing the best and most essential starting points for genres.

the2stranger 05-06-2008 08:55 AM

We had a trhead like tht ages and ages ago, I think Jondur of Legions wrote that.

It's a good idea.
I'm willing to work on (ambient) drone and funeral doom.
:)

aye, i'd like to work on death metal/black metal - we could ask the bm thread, the dm thread etc to list their top 10 albums and then somehow make a top 10 list from that. i'd make one restriction of just one album per band, to give variety to the lists.

The CR thread did that a while back. A while back means... bout 2 years. hah.

But yeah, it's a pretty solid idea. Have the regs of each threads talk about it, then edit it into the first post.

Angmar 05-06-2008 01:45 PM

I'd take part in that kind of thread as well.

Jom 05-06-2008 02:04 PM

Sounds good to me. I don't care if they're separate discussion threads for each genre (that might be preferred, incidentally) or if they're in the regular threads, just make sure that I get the lists so that I can edit them (or, better yet, have a new thread stickied at the top).

Stevie II 05-06-2008 02:47 PM

OK, great. I'd prefer a sticky thread rather than a list at the start of each thread - that could easily be ignored. I can't think right now how to organize this...perhaps open the respective threads to nominations and perhaps create a new thread for genres that don't have a thread in itself, e.g. heavy metal, then pool them together into a voting thread or something - or, any other suggestions?

Which genres? I'd say,

black metal
death metal
heavy metal
grind
thrash metal
doom metal

any others?

I'd like to stress though that it's not a matter of favorite albums in the genres, but rather the essential albums to get started with the genre. This should be good!

Kingofdudes 05-06-2008 02:52 PM

power metal?
Traditional metal?(stuff like Iron Maiden)

edit: I guess traditional could fall under heavy metal

Iluvatar 05-06-2008 02:55 PM

Guys are we forgetting that this is technically the "Rock & Metal" forum

and that not only mettul exists

Kingofdudes 05-06-2008 03:05 PM

Who actually listens to rock these days?

Stevie II 05-06-2008 03:16 PM

classical metal = heavy metal....

power metal? sure....

I don't know about opening it up to rock - this forum is called rock and metal but really only metal is discussed here anyway

you forget that the metalcore thread has more discussion going on than heavy mettle and thrash

Iluvatar 05-06-2008 03:21 PM

If we do not have "Rock" roundtable discussions then the only genre I will be able to weigh in on is metalcore!

Besides, rock still gets discussed here more than anywhere else (alt/indie doesnt count)

Jom 05-06-2008 04:01 PM

I would opt for a traditional metal tag over a classical or heavy metal tag, just because it would better set the stage for the other genres.

Rock will work as well, obviously. There are going to be albums that transcend genres (progressive - Pink Floyd compared to... Opeth? or something). We need to come up with the rock genres as well, though.

Glam will have to be one genre throw a bone at Spat Out Plath.

My suggestions for metal would go like this:

Traditional
Death
Black
Doom (I guess.)
Thrash
Power
Folk/Viking/Pirate/Ninja/Norse/Nordic/etc.
Grind
Nu/Alternative (Industrial could fit here as well I suppose)

For Rock, I would say:

Traditional
Classic
Jam
Hard/Glam
Grunge

Then, other genres:

Metalcore
Progressive (there should be a distinction between prog rock and prog metal)

---

These are only suggestions, not set in stone or anything.

Also, I want to know how you guys are going to score this in terms of a rubric.

e.g. Nominate five albums under a stratified scoring system:

1. 11 points
2. 7 points
3. 4 points
4. 2 points
5. 1 point

But if you want them weighted equally, that's fine as well, but I think having that stratification will help once more and more people contribute.

Also: while a dumb rule, there should be a specific postcount set (i.e., don't accept any posts that have < X posts [say 100, just for example) as well as no alternate accounts.

pate 05-06-2008 04:11 PM

Folk/Viking metal and grind should be included too, but it sounds good otherwise.

Jom 05-06-2008 04:24 PM

The only problem I have is that there will inevitably be arguments over albums' placement in genres. For instance, I don't want to see Blackwater Park to be in both death, progressive, and traditional metal (this is just an example).

Also, are we doing the thread all in one, or are we breaking it up by each genre? I figure an all-in-one thing will be easy if people copypasta the form in the first post, which would look like this:

Traditional Metal (rank 1-5 in descending order)
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Death Metal
1.
2.
3.
4.
5

Black Metal
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

. . . etc.

Discussion would wind up taking place in the thread, I suppose. It's going to be a monster thread, but if we keep to a very, very strict timetable, this can be squared away before mid-summer, I think.

Yeah, that will happen no matter what. Maybe we can set what genre (for example) Opeth goes under.

That sounds good to me.

Riva: do you really think that the girl in my link is ugly? can you give me some examples of non-ugly girls then?

Maybe I'm a weirdo, but i have a thing for mildly tattooed and pierced chicks.

willfellmarsy 05-06-2008 06:33 PM

Angmar 05-06-2008 06:34 PM

Please discuss review site stuff in the "Sputnik Community" sub-forum.

Ghoul Hustler 05-06-2008 06:51 PM

The album thread stuff is a terrible idea to be honest. It's just going to cause arguments and be taken down.

Iluvatar 05-06-2008 06:53 PM

the number one album for everything would just be Focus or Jane doe anyways

Ghoul Hustler 05-06-2008 06:59 PM

oh yeah, can someone unban Ghoul Hunter. I've only got two more days but am looking for a breakout. :(

Eliminator 05-06-2008 07:20 PM

who cares if it causes arguments

pate 05-06-2008 07:22 PM

Or we can just say that your post can only consist of the 'form' and nothing else.

Jom 05-06-2008 08:01 PM

Well, I'll start up a preliminary thread in a little bit just for discussion and see where it goes. pate, is there anything that should be mentioned in the general outline?

Eliminator 05-06-2008 08:02 PM

jom i dont get the difference between these two:
Traditional
Classic
can u explain

pate 05-06-2008 08:24 PM

Traditional = Breaking Benjamin
Classic = The Who

I guess.
pate, is there anything that should be mentioned in the general outline?
Nothing I can think of at this time.

Angmar 05-06-2008 08:28 PM

Classic could be like old school and traditional could be sounds like the roots of a genre or something idk. They probably don't need separation.
