i like it when he plays the guitar with the drum stick
|
that reminds me, jim o rourke, what should i start with? should i just listen to the visitor
|
insignificance prolly.
no, they do quite thoroughly
no they don't because people that say they like unlistenable music just want to be on the cutting edge and impress their equally insecure white friends.
Thurston Moore in Kill Your Idols Basically said they'd strive to make their music unlistenable.
yeah well that's really dumb and it's killing music tbh
i mean you have to look at that contextually.
um
i can appreciate certain 'noise' acts more than others because they use that 'unlistenablility' tastefully and well.
music that incorporates noise is fine: colour revolt, cymbals eat guitars, pixies, etc. but when artists make track after track of noisy, chaotic and unlistenable music, they're not really musicians, just warhol wannabes who never bothered to learn how to play their instruments.
you'll always have acts that take that too far in one direction but with Sonic Youth, I think they were also doing it a lot more as a statement
that statement being: look how many people will "appreciate" the bullshit we're making.
I think the punk/no-wave scene at the time wanted to even musically embody their rejection of mainstream culture/music.
too bad they didn't want to make good music instead.
their use of the extreme volume and atonality dynamics with their loud, fast punk music works so well.
if you listen to music to 'appreciate' it instead of enjoy it, then sure. these are usually the same people that can't dance. |
idk if you're referencing cymbals eat guitars as noise i think we're on different pages?
|
not saying they're noise re-read please. just that bands that utilize noise, like sonic youth (although admittedly i've listened to them very little), or probably my favorite example, Volcano!, can do it in a way where they're still making music. parts and labor is like listening to someone shout at you for an album.
edit: cymbals eat guitars was a bad example |
insignificance prolly.
thx |
oh
TOO INDIE TO ARGUE |
it's hard to get an argument going when both sides have no idea what they're talking about
|
i don't even know what the argument was about i suppose, but im pretty sure cymbals eat guitars are not noise...
|
it's hard to get an argument going when both sides have no idea what they're talking about
that's usually the best way to guarantee a long and explosive argument don't get mad at me because you don't have opinions |
no they don't because people that say they like unlistenable music just want to be on the cutting edge and impress their equally insecure white friends.
i know people listen to cutting edge **** to be noticed but i have known people that genuinely like new trash
apathy does a dishonor to the music and the listener. same applies to musicians that didn't take significant risks. just turnoffs, crowds the field ghastly city sleep |
hahahaha |
Last page of comments was so unbelievably lame.
Also, Parts & Labor these days are basically a pop/punk band with a load of noisy **** going on in the background. Not unlistenable in the slightest. |
i never really said they were unlistenable, i just think they suck
|
nicely put.

i got that album thinking there was no way it could be as bad as everyone said and it is. but worse prolly. i did hear them do an acoustic version of so bored that was pretty good. |
I like it but it'd probably be better if it wasn't SO lo-fi.
