Thanks for helping the guy out!
Thanks for helping the guy out!
No problem. :) Probably for the best - if it was closed with no replies, he may well have made a new one asking why it was closed, and then the whole ugly cycle repeats.....

Permanent Solution 11-05-2004 01:31 PM
If it's last 15 years, it goes back to 1989. And I'd say the first full-length record was released is a good barometer of when they officially started.

So Nirvana are on the border, by my take on it. When was Bleach released? '88 or '89?
89

I think that might work as criterion, the first LP release date. It might exclude a few deserving bands potentially, but I think it is workable.

Iai 11-05-2004 01:39 PM

It excludes Soundgarden, as November 1988 was their debut (UltraMegaOk). They stick out in my mind. But then again, you have to have criterion for 'modern'. I'll go find an example of a band who debuted in 1988 that nobody in their right mind would call modern....

Edit: There was GnR in 1987, who were in Classic Rock. And nobody should be in both. Also Public Enemy, for those who know who they are, was also 1987. For '88 you're got The Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, Morrissey, Mudhoney....would you include those?

Permanent Solution 11-05-2004 01:52 PM

Soundgarden seems to be a glaring omission, as do the pixies, but then again, GnR should definitely not be in there...maybe say 1988 instead? Up to you if you end up running it, but I would bet there would be complaints if those two were left out of the polls...

Iai 11-05-2004 02:15 PM

A quick browse tells me that your Top 100 Songs and another Top 100* are in works, so it'll probably be a while yet. :) But I'll remember that. Thanks, man.

*Edit = If Riva goes through with a new Top 100 Albums.

Here is the thread in the site forum. Not much info on it yet, though.

Good stuff, SFK. That is a really great idea. And Medopalis should be a mod of R & M, for all the good stuff he does around here.

Hey, I was wondering if we could start an "exposure" thread. Somewhere were people can post bands that they think are up-and-coming, or are relatively unknown. We would have to restrict people from posting their own bands though.

We could set it up so that they review the band, give it a genre, classification, etc. and then list their favourite song and maybe a link to their sample mp3s etc.

Also, how would a "Recommended songs thread" go down? It seems we always have tons of people saying "Recommend me some Megadeth, etc." and it clutters up the forums quite a bit. I redirect them if it is related to an official thread (e.g. Classic Rock or Death Heads etc), but some of these are of relatively unknown bands. So in this thread, they post the band, and their general musical tastes, and others can then give a list of songs that they think that poster will like. I haven't got a major beef with these types of threads, but it would streamline the forum a bit. (In my opinion at least :) )

What do you all think? Sorry if it is a bit unclear what I'm getting at. :p
We had a thread like that for awhile. Ive been asking where it is ever since it disappeared. I have asked 3 times in this very thread where it is haha.

You might want to look at the threadstarter as well, as he created a thread like it in The Pit where the link is meant to manipulate the reputation system (I think). I'm not sure, as I've given my limit out in the last 24 hours...
