Nice, nice. I have an Ibanez, too.

Nepenthe 11-02-2009 02:47 PM

everybody knows ibanez are the only guitars that play metal

RetiredAt21 11-02-2009 02:48 PM

well yeah but only with one chick. pretty much ****ed the **** out of her, got ridiculously hammered, and went to a bunch of awesome parties. without sleeves, which i see you were doing as well. lack of sleeves is liberating.

yeah no not gonna read any tolkien. my knowledge of elves has been passed onto me through the keebler elves.

illmitch 11-02-2009 03:32 PM

insulting tolkien's genius? get the heck outta here

Nepenthe 11-02-2009 03:43 PM

i think i read a page from one of those books and had no care to go any further

"so, aragorn, son of of arathorn, brother of aralorn, whose sister araherr was the first queen of the blasted lands of dunahor, where dwells the krimanor, whose residence in the hill-ridden fields of the county feramore is much to the bane of the duke gerimor, son of ladimir..."

illmitch 11-02-2009 03:46 PM

even your debased imitation of tolkien's luscious work is enough to give me a pretty big boner

Nostalgia 11-02-2009 03:46 PM

hahaha

i enjoyed the books but it's just annoying that each scene has to take 30 pages to finally end.

Nepenthe 11-02-2009 03:48 PM

i just dont really like fantasy books. i did in like middle school. pretty much cormac mccarthy has been ruling my reading for the past year or so and i plan on continuing to read every book hes written.

looooooooooooooooooool

AA-12 11-02-2009 03:49 PM

tolkien is a horrible writer, but his ideas and worlds are amazing.

GRRM will always reign best

illmitch 11-02-2009 04:11 PM

GRRM is wonderful
i also love robert jordan
and i dont care, i still love tolkiens writing for the ridiculous grandiosity of it
same reason i love lovecraft tbh

Nepenthe 11-02-2009 04:14 PM

im down with lovecraft. he only goes on the allusions sprees every now and then, and when he does its usually to names and places from other stories. tolkiens allusions just seem to be random **** that the reader has absolutely no knowledge of.

beans 11-02-2009 04:15 PM

i love how poopty filmmakers still try to make films from lovecrafts material

AA-12 11-02-2009 04:15 PM

lovecraft's style is reasonable i think. it really helps set the mood.

Nostalgia 11-02-2009 04:16 PM

cool air is my favorite lovecraft

illmitch 11-02-2009 04:16 PM

i was just talking about the labyrinthine quantities of adjectives in lovecrafts and tolkiens prose, which i think adds to both writers style

tbh tolkiens references make sense if you obsess over him as much as i do, maybe thats just me idk

Nostalgia 11-02-2009 04:18 PM

the hobbit
two towers
fellowship
return of the king

tbh

Nepenthe 11-02-2009 04:19 PM

lovecrafts use of adjectives is fitting though, like josh said it really helps set the mood. the picture in the house is probably my favorite, or rats in the walls.

mccarthy is a pretty pretentious writer himself. i mean, what other author has one sentence describing marauding indians that is an entire page long haha.

illmitch 11-02-2009 04:22 PM

god rats in the walls is so amazing

@nostalgia: better not forget the silmarillion

Txus 11-02-2009 04:22 PM

I really like Lovecrafts At the Mountain of Madness.

AA-12 11-02-2009 04:23 PM

anything related to the lovecraft/cthulhu mythos = the best

Deth 11-02-2009 04:25 PM

lovecraft's writing style is about the most hideous thing I've read, I couldn't read more than 3 or 4 short stories because he takes awesome ideas and makes them really, really boring

Nepenthe 11-02-2009 04:25 PM

something about the picture in the house is just very unsettling to me. the tension created in it is unbelievable.

illmitch 11-02-2009 04:29 PM

the end of rats in the walls is just incredible. the way lovecraft manages to describe the descent of somebody into insanity is just amazing.

Lolwut.

Nah, srsly. You just have to get used to his style. He takes a looong time to portray area's, but in the end I was glad he did, because it really adds so much to the books.

I think James Clemens is also a good fantasy writer. Anyone agree/disagree?

illmitch 11-02-2009 04:56 PM

i'm not familiar with clemens, what did he write?

Jaundice 11-02-2009 04:57 PM

Puddn'head Wilson, Huckleberry Finn, etc

illmitch 11-02-2009 05:01 PM

that was samuel clemens you silly goose

Morumbar 11-02-2009 05:02 PM

Ehrr, I mean the James Clemens that wrote the Godslayer series.

illmitch 11-02-2009 05:07 PM

i havent read those, ill have to look him up

RouteOne 11-02-2009 07:33 PM
lovecraft's style is reasonable i think. it really helps set the mood.
If anything Lovecraft's writing style is far more dryer than anything Tolkien wrote.
