12 bar Bues - killer easy
Deftones: Root -easy
System of a Down: Peephole- easy
Anything really by greenday - easy
Phish - Down with Disease - easy to moderate - Good slap with Drop D tuning
Phish - Llama Taboo - medium - it's pretty fast, but repetitive.
Grey Boy All stars - Jack Rabbit - pretty easy
Herbie Hancock - Chamelian - Easy, but the first notes are pickups and can throw ya.
Karl Denson - Unwind your mind - really easy - it's a 1-5 in C

Jerytheracecardriver get 1,000 cool points from me. Now we just have to post this in the normal forum and add some more advanced songs to the list. Songs for tapping, songs for slapping, songs for harmonics, songs for double thumbing. Songs for billy and songs for sue. Songs that love to be played by you. Songs that dance and laugh and sing. Songs that simply don't do a thing. Ok im done.

Sorry for going backwards a long way in time, but in the second post in this thread, "JerrytheRacecarDriver" said that RHCP - Higher Ground was a good beginners song. I view myself as a pretty handy bassist and i still have trouble with the starting riff in this song... Was this a mistake or does everyone just outclass me so incredibly? Personally, i suspect the latter of the two!

bassman21 10-05-2004 07:54 AM

I have to say, if people are looking for a relatively easy piece to improve their rythym on the bass, they should try playing the Bass part for Led Zeppelin - Moby DIck... Apart from being a great song that's fun to play, it really gets you using a lot of the fretboard and is great for a general fun piece to play...

Jerry the Racecar Driver 10-05-2004 08:01 AM

bassman21, I never said that Higher Ground was easy, merely that it was a good song for practising/learning slap with.

The riff itself is one of the simplest slap riffs I can name, but it does move at a speed which makes it tricky for some.

I can play pretty much all of the Rage songs I've looked at without too much of a hassle, but I can't figure out the technique to Take the Power Back. Anyone with some measure of skill care to clarify on that one?

Yeah, I know the tabs, but I'm wondering about the actual technique of playing the song. It sounds kinda slap/pop to me, but I just can't figure it out. No matter how many times I've played the song through, I can't get the same sound and feel.

Wintermute 11-03-2004 05:27 PM

It is slap/pop. Tim C has a very unique sound, partly because he makes his own pickups, but that's the technique, at least.

pos_bassist 11-04-2004 08:16 PM

Is there a place on the internet that I can find all of these songs so I can hear them? It's kind of hard to learn them if I can't hear them. I used to have Kazaa but that screwed up my computer big time so I don't have that anymore. Any suggestions of a place I can listen to them at would be appreciated, thanks.

wally the wombat 11-06-2004 01:40 PM

Lol, the first song i actually learned to play all the way through was the YTSE jam by Dream Theater I think it is a good beginner song ( but the solo is HARD)

resurrectionbassist 11-06-2004 07:22 PM

Red Hot Chili Peppers Higher Ground is not that difficult and sounds really cool.
Metallica's Seek and Destroy easy good open notes and hammer ons practice
Pantera's Walk easy good practice on timing
Nirvana any song of theirs

angry armadillo 11-09-2004 10:27 AM

The Hives - Main offender - easy, almost moderate - gets a begginer moving their fingers around :thumb:

Grondahl 11-11-2004 12:49 PM

Invisible Touch by Genesis has got a pretty cool and fun bassline. Some of the faster fills may be a little tricky for an absolute beginner, though.

Also:
At last, my genius is recognised .

Anyway, here's my contribution:

Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye - Easy, but hella fun and incredibly catchy
Jeff Buckley - Grace - Easy

Jeff Buckley - Forget Her - Easy
Jeff Buckley - Mojo Pin - This and the two above it are great examples of awesome phrasing
Yes - Roundabout - Easy
Muse - Time Is Running Out - Easy
Tim Buckley - No Man Can Find The War - Easy

Jeff Buckley - Eternal Life (the rocked up version) - Moderate
Muse - Hysteria - Moderate
Primus - Groundhog's Day - Pretty easy chording/slap practise
RHCP - Higher Ground - Slap practise
