Mine are:-
New Born
Stockholm Syndrome
Hysteria (from new album)
any replies appreciated.
Johnny Wonderpants
09-16-2003, 08:43 AM
To everyone saying he's an amazing singer. He has a nice voice, but it's all in ****ing falsetto! Talk about easy.
Anyway, top three is too hard, so it's top 3 from each album
Showbiz
Sunburn
Cave
Citizen Erased
Microcuts
Space Dementia
Butterflies And Hurricanes
Stockholm Syndrome (Mainly for the orgasm at the end)
Hysteria
Dead Star
Futurism

That last one was miscellaneous tracks...
I love Muse
09-16-2003, 10:22 AM
He has an amazing voice both in normal and in falsetto! I go by the theory he was hit in the nuts as a kid and that is why he can sing like that. I'm amazed he's self taught on piano, he's f***ing amazing... The other two in the band are quite good also.
Johnny Wonderpants
09-16-2003, 07:30 PM
He is an amazing musician, yes. But Falsetto isn't very hard. If he could hit those notes in his head voice, I'd be very impressed...
Don't think I'm saying anything derogatory towards Matt, I mean Muse are one of my top 5 bands...
I love Muse
09-17-2003, 09:04 AM
I'd agree with you about the first point. However, how can you put muse ONLY in a top five? They are by far the best and most innovative band around. With AFI a close second.
stevenkeith
09-17-2003, 09:49 AM
What's Falsetto?
Johnny Wonderpants
09-17-2003, 03:24 PM
Falsetto is a higher pitched voice register, that's a lot weaker in tone than lower registers. Matt can do it very well, but anyone can sing in falsettos. For example, if you're a guy and not a vocallist, and you try to sing like a girl, that's probably falsetto.
@I Love Muse, you must understand how diverse the music I listen to is, my top 5 bands are probably
Dream Theater
Opeth
Muse
Iron Maiden
Godspeed You! Black Emperor...
I love Muse
09-18-2003, 01:21 AM
The only two I've heard of in your list are Muse and Iron Maiden. What are the other three like? Any recommendations?
Four more days to Absolution... YAY!
Johnny Wonderpants
09-18-2003, 07:40 AM
Dream Theater are Progressive Metal, Opeth are hard to place in a genre, but Progressive Death Metal is probably the closest thing. Godspeed You! Black Emperor are post rock, something you are probably unfamiliar with. If you want to try out GY!BE, I'd say, try the song, Moya, but you probably wont like it at first, if it all. It's very weird and different...

Bliss is still the finale song as it is the bands favourite song (and in my opinion is probably the best song they could play to end the gig with), the support band will depend on where you're seeing them (this is based on what happened at their last British gig as they arranged several different bands to support them).
Out of interest where is everyone seeing them? I'm going to the nottingham gig and the gig at their home town (Exeter).

There's an unwritten rule about gigs.. and it goes something like this...
Never wear clothes with the band that you are going to see written on them!!
Example: If you go to a Muse gig, dont wear Muse clothes :p
And the reason?? It is guaranteed that there will be a million other 13 year old teener bopper ****s wearing the same 'muse' top as you... if you have a diff. band, you wont bump into somebody wearing the same clothes as you.
Once you've seen two different bands and got 2 different tee's, you're a-ok :)
But most importantly, have fun! :D

It seems Decoymilk is a battle hardened gig veteran! He does have a good point, but if you wear the same clothes as the band you're seeing, it means that you are willing to support them enough to see them and buy their merchandise.
And yeah, fun is the main thing!

I recently got Absolution and in my opinion it's good, but then again I'm not really into the "Muse" kind of music. I'm into metal mostly, but Matt is talented, but I think the faggot wails too much :P He ruins most of the songs by sounding like someone is squeezing his balls, yet it does suit some of the songs. Seriously though, I think he needs to stop wailing as much.
I love Muse
10-14-2003, 09:06 AM
Interesting view... not agreed with by me. The fact that Matt's voice is completely unique makes the band complete. It sounds like there are four instruments played by three people, and I reckon that's quite impressive.

Muse are ORIGINAL...
Unlike the 123,200,394,466,789 Punk Bands that sound exactly the same, Same goes for alot of Rock bands and Metal bands.
Only band Muse really compare to are Radiohead, but i think Muse are better, their music is more...i dunno how to put it...'Machure'?
They experiment, Absolution has alot of Classical style in it, (eg - Blackout?). His Voice is unique, and tricky to sing along with. He can play Piano at lightning speedsm blah blah blah.
One other thing i love about Muse, is the bass. Tons of band's bass players just play the root note of what the guitar is playing, but Muse have Bass melodies and they are soo cool and funky :)
I could go on for ages, but they are all very talented.

Also, people are getting a bit annoyed with the constant playing of Absolution in our common room. The irony... if only they knew what good music is.

well put, Roddy. I learnt as much of Apocalypse Please as I could (basically what was on www.musclemuse.com). I probably won't ever get round to recording it, though. I like more kind of NU Metal vocalists hence the System of a down picture :p Anyways the band that me and my friends might be starting will be Nu metal. I havn't posted on here for a while so I'll write about stuff that was posted a while ago.
In my opinion, Matt's voice is amazing and very unique. He has a superb range and anyone who is willing to critise it, will they first please sing me all three muse albums, in tune and be able to reach every note, then you can slag his voice off.
Also, Wow to deepfat! You're so lucky to meet Matt Bellamy! It would be a dream come true for me to meet muse! They all rule!
Also in answer to Roddy, yeah muse bass is brilliant!I play bass and i love playing all their songs! bass is quite annoying with most bands because it has loads of repetition in it but muse actually make use of bass which makes them sound even better!
Also, i just want to ask people, i play keyboard at the moment but I want to start piano, mainly because i want to learn some Muse songs, I'm 15, do you rekon I'm too old to take it up?
I love Muse
10-19-2003, 03:19 PM
You are never too old to take up piano (unless you're dead, of course). As I am taking psychology AS level, here's the clever bit:
When you are younger, you learn faster. The brain is creating neural pathways faster and stronger when you are younger.
Having said that (I'm not a boffin, I just listen in lessons), If you have a good keyboard background, it should make it a lot easier to learn piano. The main differences are the weight of the keys, the dynamics, the pedals, and the range. It helps to just have a half-hour go on a piano. I much prefer piano to keyboards (unless they're really nice keyboards). :)
Some Muse songs are quite easy, some are blooming hard (Butterflies and Hurricanes), but the best way to learn them is to play along with the CD.
Hope all this helps in your quest to learn piano.

Woo i'm going on 29th too, and thanks for the tips on piano!! Keyboard is very limited i think but piano is sounds way more classy!
This is my first post on this thread but I'll try and make relevant comments...
For sure piano sounds way classier.. I_Love_Muse Said: "The main differences (between keyboards and pianos) are the weight of the keys, the dynamics, the pedals, and the range. It helps to just have a half-hour go on a piano. I much prefer piano to keyboards (unless they're really nice keyboards)."
Those are four extremely significant differences, and they're only in the actual playing of the instrument. The tone, dynamics, everything, the very sound of the piano is so much better than any keyboard ever made. Keyboards are a different instrument all together. No keyboard, no matter how nice, comes close to a piano.
Also, it's never too late to start learning the piano. Learning early is a good advantage, but I have a friend who's 17 who started playing about 3 or 4 years ago, and has already done grade 5 and can play Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, etc. Just whatever you do, don't get discouraged if you can't play everything by Muse after 2 weeks, it will take time, but the rewards are worth every bit. :thumb:
P.S. Matthew does have an awesome, awesome voice! Plus he's a great guitarist and they only really really good pianist I know of in rock music.

It doesn't sound like any Rachmaninov I've ever heard. It's fast and impressive with loud arpeggios and chords but that's about it. the guy is one talented dude, and some of their songs are so great.
i have a friend who is completely obsessed with them, and i can see why.

Muse were good. Now they're just another pretentious, angsty brit-pop act. Matt Bellamy could write cool tunes, but he's not as good at singing as he thinks he is.

Fair comment, but is this a gripe at their latest album? Virtually everyone agrres that Origin of Symmetry was amazing, but they've gone in a different direction from that.

hm hm ...
most of matts keyboarding sounds amazing, but is really quite simple i find ... i have never learned the piano, but at some point i thought "i can play sunburn on the guitar, i can play newborn on the guitar, why not try it on the keaboard as well " ... and yeah, its easy... of course not all his stuff is simple...
ive seen AFI mentioned a couple of times in this thread ... how do you combine AFI with muse??!?
yeah... showbiz is best, origin of symmetrie rocks, hoolabaloo is interesting ...
and absolution is... hm ... the album i like the least... i think they defnatly need to find back to their roots...
but yeah... matt is awasome... during the entire hoolabaloo dvd i think there is one minor mistake in his playing, i did not find anything else.
but:
the bass player rocks. he is way more than just a bass player. i think he plays the guitar better than matt ectually, and he rocks. and so does the drummer. muse would be nothing without the other two, so dont give matt all the credit.
oh yeah.
last summer in croatia i met this person from england and told him about muse. he said "yeah, ive heard of them, but dont remember where" .. i showed him the hulabaloo dvd, and he said "ah i remember... theire a local band, from the town i grew up in ... Matt is a asshole... how come you know them?"
sort of funny i find...

Amen brother \m/ I don't understand why so many people wank over them so much, I've heard better bands that deserve more attention than they have.

That's an incredibly commercial attitude to have. That's like saying therefore you haven't heard of Dream Theater, they must suck, even though they're recognised by many musicians as one of the most talented bands in their genre. But hell, just because YOU haven't heard of them...

My problem? Wtf is the world's problem. Screw you all . . . you think that's illogical? It's illogical that some beginner fag has a grand piano, and I have a ****box untunable upright. It's illogical the only music I hear on the radio is made and listened to by scallies and their computers. It's illogical that I got given a broken nose by a druggo for bashing his mate who threw a glass bottle at my face. It's illogical that all girls I know prefer guys that look and act like neanderthals. So, I might as well fit into this illogical world, and hold opinions without backing them up? Is that good enough, you homosexual freak??!

Yeah he's a an amazing piano player, I saw them live it blew me away and he did Space Dementia and i was just amazed to see that he played it perfectly and sang and then switch to guitar at the end!! I know this Level 8 piano player and he is amazing I think he's a hot pick for the National orchestra or whatever they're called anyways and it took him a least half an hour to get it and even then it wasnt perfect. Matt bellamy is a sicko

As good as Matthew Bellamy is, particularly having taught himself, he's not THAT good. It doesn't sound that technical and classically trained to the classically trained ear. I am in awe of the guy, but really, his playing is very chord and arpeggio based. The coda in Apocalypse Please is quite simple, it just has loud, big chords that jump around a lot to sound impressive. By far his most impressive playing is the bridge of Butterflies and Hurricanes, but even that's not all that difficult, really. It's simply a few chords broken up and played very quickly.
Not to say I could play like he does and sing like he does at the same time.
The man is my modern rock hero, but he's no Ludwig or Wolfgang or Frederic Chopin. No way. I reckon he's better at guitar than he is at piano, but maybe that's coz I'm a hopeless guitarist.
Speedy Fingers
06-01-2004, 06:06 AM
I agree, there are far better keyboard and piano players around the world, but the sad thing is they don't make it big like he has, so not a lot of people understand how much more technical piano playing can get. And he's not a better guitarist that keyboardist!!!!
PianoDan
06-02-2004, 03:37 AM
Yeah, that's the thing. There should be more piano in rock music.
I wouldn't really know if he's better at guitar or piano, he just seems to me really good at guitar coz he's far, far, far better than I am; his piano playing is nothing out of my reach, so to me that doesn't seem so awesome. I wouldn't know really.

Yay! A Muse thread, what fun.
Matt is a great pianist, simply for the fact that he's not afraid to use it so prevalently in his music. The fact that he can play Space Dementia and sing as well continues to astound me. While its true there are tons of guys who can play better than him, he is excellent when it comes to interpretation of his stuff. If he can make something simple seem incredibly difficult, than thats almost as good as actually playing something difficult. As musicians its our job to be showmen, no matter what we're playing.
He is definitely a better guitarist than pianist though, coming from a guy who does both. I especially appreciate his use of Efx, nice to see someone really trying to experiment with new sounds and auto-harmonies.
Going back to his piano playing, his version of Rach's prelude no. 2 on the DVD is excellent, im sure anyone would agree.
Also anyone picked up the little motive he borrows from the Rach Concerto no. 2 in Space Dementia? Its at the end of the chorus vocal line.

I just started listening to muse after I read this thread- Matt Belamy is an awsome piano player! He also has an incredible voice. I think he should find another guitarist, and focus only on piano and singing. That way, he could use the piano in more of his songs.

Maybe, but i have a huge amount of respect for Muse because they're a three piece. They have a huge sound that is really hard to get with only three people. Somehow i think adding someone else would cost them the great dynamics they got going. Just me.

Yeah, I agree. If he had a clone, and had him playing guitar and piano at the same time, it'd be awesome. Though I reckon instead of getting another guitarist, he should get another pianist and play guitar himself. A real, trained pianist, not just anyone.

No, i htink they have a nice ballance of songs with and songs witout, it works right....also some songs have both alternating...or, one then the other like newborn....i think its best as it is, each instrument is amde to lead and u cant have 2 leaders.
