new york? lol. might as well say Little Rock if you're going to be that random. i'm sorry, but when there are not one, but TWO artists in most critics' top 5 of the year from that city, then you're probably smoking crack if you think they're completely irrelevant.

jay electronica is from new orleans, so you'll definitely be eating your words when he drops his debut this year.

NY hip hop kinda sucks nowadays, Raekwon is the exception that proves the rule

mos def, el-p, let me go through my collection and name off a ton more...

yeah it's not as revolutionary as it was in the late 90s, but it's still not even close to one of the "worst" cities for hiphop.

i'll give you el-p, but new mos def didnt wow me at all

i think given its former glory, NY is just set to a higher standard

Yeah whatever. I mean, you can say New York isn't as hot as it used to be, but it will never be one of the worst cities for Hip Hop. That's just a ridiculous statement.

Detroit is gonna be huge in 2010, 3 Black Milk projects for a start.

This, but I think you means disproves the rule. Also, Nicki Minaj, despite being associated with Cash Money based in New Orleans, is from New York.

As for New Orleans, you can't deny that they have sucky artists, see Lil Wayne, B.G, Juvenile, Young Money, BIRDMAN.

As for New York being IRRELEVANT, that's false, because they are relevant, they just don't produce much talent.

And as for Kingsoby talking about the 90's, I said currently. 90's New York rap was pretty damn awesome, but now it's pretty disappointing.

Philly is decent, somewhere in the middle of the pack. Next to New York, they're the biggest city in terms of East coast rap. Pry their best artist is the group Jedi Mind Tricks, which is a popular ungerground rap group. The biggest is Freeway, he's fairly big right now. Then there's Beanie Sigel, recently coming into the limelight because of his beef with Jay-Z, but he's not that exciting.

And I thought about putting that as third, and it probably should be third, but...because of my personal bias towards Jay Rock...I put LA. Should pry edit that....

I know of Jedi Mind Tricks, I've only heard "Saviorself" though, if you know the song.

Besides that I've only heard of Meek Mills around here.

Hm, well if you're a jazz musician that's a rap fan, then you should probably look northeast of your city, towards New York, and take a trip back to 90's New York hip hop. 90's NYC rap contained alot of jazzy elements more often than not. Specifically, you should start out with Nas' Illmatic. That's a really good album, just the atmosphere it creates is astounding.

whoops. did not read properly that time. my bad my bad.

and, as much as I HATE to admit it, I don't know all that much about hip hop. I mean, I'd like to think I have good taste, and I know more than the average bear. But, I don't know as much as someone like you kingsoby.

Not sarcasm, btw.

That's not sarcasm either ^

Dammit, it's just not sarcasm.

That's why my boy hydeyomoney is helping me with my Rap Rehab. Before I joined sputnik, I HARDLY listened to albums, just pulled tracks off of albums, so, over these past two months, I've been relistening to stuff and listening to stuff I haven't heard, trying to catch the **** up to where I should be for a hip-hop listener of four years, esp. considering I ONLY listen to hiphop.
