View Full Version : AotW (10/18/09): GETEYE - Above the Clouds & Orphans of Cush - White Noize
10-18-2009, 08:00 AM
October has been an insane month for me for finding undiscovered 2009 gems. Both of these records have a legit shot at appearing in my top 10 list. GETEYE is a producer from France that channels Oh No and Onra - pretty much a clinic on post-Dilla production styles. The guy's young, out of nowhere, and just dropped his beat-tape (Above the Clouds) for free:
Next up are the Orphans of Cush, a UK supergroup that can definitely challenge the Wu-Tang Clan for international lyrical supremacy. This isn't your run-of-the-mill grime rap record; in fact it shares much more with US east-coast hip-hop than anything else. The beats aren't terribly dense, but they complement the lyrical barrage extremely well. Comprised of Kyza, Masikah, M9, and Cyrus Malachi, this is easily a top 10 record of 2009.
Nice. Buying White Noize when I get paid but this will do in the meantime.

Yeah that Orphans of Cush album is really good
I think "Why?" and "Where We At?" are my favourites on first listen. Really like it though.

let's keep calling things post-Dilla
10-18-2009, 01:55 PM
It's better than post-rock
10-18-2009, 02:07 PM
yeah, but everything is better than post-rock
Sobhi, are you reviewing White Noize? I have one written but I'll wait if you wanna go first.

So is it Cush as in the Hindu Kush or some other thing?
Oh, cush is drugs judging from it so far :p. Gosh I'm square.
Or the dude from the Bible.
10-23-2009, 01:18 AM

I don't know if I dig this GETEYE as much. It's kind of cool but I'm not sure what to really think about when I listen through a beat tape. Is the idea that it's like a portfolio of your production?
10-24-2009, 08:10 AM
yeah pretty much
10-25-2009, 04:48 AM
Orphans of Cush album is mad. I expected it to be really grimy I guess, probably because I don't know much Uk hiphop, but it was sick. Thoroughly impressed.
10-26-2009, 02:38 PM
anyone dig on GETEYE?
10-26-2009, 02:40 PM
I thought it was okay, I'm not really in the right headspace for beat tape appreciation though.
****ing love Orphans Of Cush I'll be paying for a hard copy.
10-26-2009, 07:10 PM
