In all honesty, I really wouldn't be surprised if this were true.

What are your thoughts?

I've been saying this for years
Mr. Ron
08-02-2009, 06:09 PM
the US was once called "the middle east of the western hemisphere" at one point you know
until we ran out of oil
Mute Requiem
08-02-2009, 06:13 PM
i was under the impression it was much tougher to get oil out of the earth in the other parts of the globe compared to the Middle East, thus making it very cost ineffective.
I could be wrong though so bitch at me if I am
Mr. Ron
08-02-2009, 06:24 PM
Is there any scholarly material available on just how much oil is in that slope?
Kickflip_Burrito

I think the US (and the rest of the world) are using up the oil in the Middle East and then USA will be an energy superpower when the rest of the world turns to them for oil.
i was under the impression it was much tougher to get oil out of the earth in the other parts of the globe compared to the Middle East, thus making it very cost ineffective.

I think Canada has a lot of fuel reserves but getting it out requires a lot of special machinery so you're right there.
Mr. Ron

What we need to invest in is more nuclear energy.

There's still tons of oil, but it's getting harder and harder to exploit. It's unlikely we'll run out of oil so much as it will become prohibitively expensive.
People who insist there's enough oil for the rest of human civilization are dumb. People who think we're going to run out in 5 years are dumb too. The truth is somewhere in between.

There doesn't need to be enough for until the end of humans there only needs to be enough for until we work out how to harness fusion power or something.
Mr. Ron

True, however we just don't use oil for powering things. A lot of the stuff we manufacture for consumer goods needs oil to be made. Like toothbrushes and shi.

i'd like to point out that the point isnt necessarily "energy" per say that is the problem but the other uses of oil that is tricky to overcome. We could build all the renewable energy we want, however, we havent figured out how to replicate oil as a input of production (for example, plastics)
Though, honestly, I am not too worried about the crisis in general.
Haliburton
08-02-2009, 08:03 PM
like 85% of oil is used for energy you fags
if we cut down by that much we'll have a long time to figure out how to replace plastics

No, there needs to be enough affordable oil until we figure the rest out.
You can have a bajillion barrels of oil left, if it costs 100 dollars per liter to get it here it's useless. That's the real problem with the oil that's buried so deep underground or in hard-to-exploit conditions; sure it's there, but it can't be exploited at a cost that's acceptable to consumers. If the price of oil climbs enough to strangle the world it doesn't really matter how much there is left.

We know how. The problem is that nobody wants to spend on renewable technologies until we're already screwed, and by then it'll be too late.

if its more expensive its not a replacement is it

You're not really addressing any of my points but hey ok.
Investment in renewable energies is needed NOW because it will take years until renewable energy infrastructure is capable of replacing most or all of the energy needs we currently fill with oil. If we wait, by the time we're feeling the price of oil enough, it will be too late to set up renewable energy without affecting our quality of life in the mean time.
Put it this way - getting a cavity drilled usually hurts more than the cavity itself, but if you wait until the cavity hurts more than a dentist's drill, it's likely you'll lose the whole tooth and part of your jaw to infection. You're better off going to the dentist as soon as there's a sign of a problem.

Renewable technologies are usually very inefficient and not at all cost effective that is why.
Nuke power ftw.
Mr. Ron

I like the fact that we can agree on guns and Nuclear power. :]
I don't see why we don't use nuclear power more. Of course there are risks, however with new laws and ways of handling the waste and such it shouldn't be a problem.

The risks have been greatly exaggerated. Not only that, we have the realistic capabilities to develop very clean and very safe nuke energy that doesn't create weapons grade plutonium.

people who think nuclear is too risky are idiots
edit: what siva said

Yeah I think the US could handle it better than the Ukraine.

The key safety feature wasn't installed prior to start-up because they wanted to save face and start the plant on time. In fact, that safety feature was what was being tested when the meltdown occurred (if I recall correctly).

yeah let's burn every last drop of oil so our atmosphere is like it was in the cretaceous. 125 degrees with 100% humidity, everywhere. don't worry, we can all eat mangoes.

Global average surface temperature in the Cretaceous was about 20 degrees Centigrade
Haliburton
08-03-2009, 03:00 PM
we need to warm up the planet to counter global cooling anyway
so yeah pretty good idea man
1338 h4x0r

huh

08-03-2009, 03:05 PM
you heard

08-03-2009, 03:13 PM
are you spouting the "global cooling was mainstream science in the 70's" myth
please god help me
Haliburton
08-03-2009, 03:19 PM
no im saying we're currently in an interglacial period and that at some point the world is going to cool quite a lot and its going to suck for humans
actually our whole existence is on a knife-edge and we know so little about the planet that its pretty pointless to whine about climate change
1338 h4x0r
08-03-2009, 03:26 PM
ok are you aware that processes currently set in motion by industry could eventually exacerbate cooling
Haliburton
08-03-2009, 03:28 PM
yeah but we dont know either way
so why bother caring
Angmar
08-03-2009, 03:37 PM
Cleanliness is overrated.
If industry was free from environmental regulation we could all be as clean as China!

you're pretty stupid bro not gonna lie

08-03-2009, 04:00 PM
yeah but we dont know either way
so why bother caring
we only get to make this decision once
so it's important to try to reckon subjective probabilities for the outcomes of our actions
I mean geez it's not like every decision is made under certainty
Haliburton
08-03-2009, 04:05 PM
well you only ever get to make any decision once subsequent decisions are different decisions
and we know so little about how the climate system works its retarded to conjecture about what we should be doing to aid the 'problems' in it
Angmar
08-03-2009, 04:07 PM

No bro seriously even if by some chance global warming is fake what is wrong with keeping things clean for the better of humanity?
I know it doesn't coincide with the libertarian utopia but still.

It's hard to estimate exactly how much oil reserve there is because OPEC and others make numbers up as to how much oil is left so they can regulate the price.
There is oil in other areas than the Middle East, but it's the main exporter. Canada is actually has the 2nd largest reserve of oil per country, but extracting it is a much more difficult and costly process in Alberta than the many other areas.
