So yeah there's a lot of people on the planet. Lots of gross rivers and lakes. Drinking water is already scarce in some places. The oceans are full of water, but we can't drink it.
We have water desalination plants already, but they use a ton of energy and while "worth it" there is probably a better way. Which i thought of last night while falling asleep.
http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr323/disablingpeach/fdafd.jpg
water comes in from the ocean in a pipe. the glass dome acts as a magnifying glass and evaporates the water quickly. the vapor then condenses on the pipe, crystal clear and no salt. (ready to drink) this is obviously very simplified, but i think it is plausible.
maybe one of you crazy capitalists can steal and put motion to my idea here i'll be happy just knowing i saved the world.

I think they already make portable ones for hikers and stuff. I don't see why this idea wouldn't work as long as you could find a way to efficiently condense and collect the steam, but it seems like you'd probably be better off using the land to put up solar panels or wind turbines.

I have an idea:
Cut stupid regulations on nuke power so research into Thorium derived nuke energy can become realistic and flourish, and then the huge amount of power required for effective desalination facilities will become virtually a non-issue.

An idea I had walking home was to use the mechanics of the visual cortex to abstract vector images from raster images
I can see plenty of applications for this method from image compression to rotoscoping (like in that movie A Scanner Darkly), depending on which level of abstraction in the visual cortex you use
Why I might even flesh this idea out fully in grad school

Then you know that 95% of a spent nuclear fuel rod is natural uranium. A nuclear reactor's "waste" can be reused to refuel it.
You'd also know that the radioactive part constitutes only about 5%, and of that, half is uranium and plutonium, and so it can be recycled as fuel (mixed-oxide fuel), which is exactly what the French have been doing for about 25 years now. They store all their "waste" in one room, under La Hague, which is about the size of a basketball gymnasium. 25 years worth. The only reason the US currently has 50k tons of nuclear "waste," is because our government won't allow nuclear plants to reuse it (Thank you horrible president Jimmy Carter).
And all this is uranium based nuke power. Thorium based is even theoretically a better source.
Nuclear energy is the cleanest, most efficient energy we have by a long shot. But you already knew that, amirite?
TerranYouApart
07-29-2009, 02:57 AM
i can think of a number of ways to increase the surface exposure of the water so that it evaporates faster. a number of materials you could use to trap light inside the dome or arch.

Nuclear fuel is probably cleaner than carbon based energy. We should just designate some place no-one cares about like Utah as the world's nuclear fuel waste dump and then we'd solve all our energy needs until we develop fusion.

You wouldn't even need much of Utah if powerplants were allowed to reuse.
Even less so with Thorium. The only reason thorium wasn't used originally was because it didn't produce waste that could be used for weapons grade plutonium. Thank you governments and their dick swinging competitions.

apparently, as i was looking around the interwebs...just to ref this video at the end:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sqRvUzqDCE
apparently pollution and other junk *also* evaporates and gets collected (like acid rain) So... it definitely requires a more complex system of filters.
Not to mention, I'm not entirely sure, but people require lots of water on demand. Waiting for water to evaporate slowly, being dependent on the weather/climate, etc wont exactly meet people's demands quickly.
TerranYouApart
07-29-2009, 09:58 AM
right on, although this idea was just to desalinate the water, not really to purify it.
if there were a way to "flash" evaporate the water maybe the idea would work better on a mass scale. i wasn't really thinking of that stuff, just the principle.
