View Full Version : a mormon argument about being a liberal christian

this is an argument my sister (J. R.) had with a couple girls on facebook. im seriously ashamed to know this is how my sister thinks. a year ago she was baptized Mormon so she thinks she knows everything and she thinks shes a perfect Christian when in reality Mormons arent Christians even though they claim they are.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

J. R.
being a christian liberal is such an oxy-moron. stop being hypocrites.

K. A.
I disagree. I am a Christian AND a liberal. Liberal is not a dirty word. The only issue is abortion and I am pro-life. We should not be narrowly defined by broad terms. Separation of church and state exists to PROTECT our rights

J. R.
it's all or nothing. if you believe in scripture and in Jesus Christ, you can't pick and choose what you believe in and fight for. it's all or nothing. and im not here to argue, just stating the facts.

K. A.
im not picking or choosing. that is MY belief in Christianity.

J. R.
lets just agree to disagree. you have your own way of believing and I have the truth.

K. A.
"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" Evelyn Beatrice Hall

J. R.
"He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding" Proverbs 15:32
Scripture is truth!

K. A.
"How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,' when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye." Luke 6:42

J. R.
that is taken out of context

K. A.
No, it is not. It is extremely important that you call forth God's judgment with complete nonattachment and with a feeling of pure love. Pure love, divine love, is unconditional, and therefore it has no expectations of other people... Read More’s reactions. If you give the judgment call from a position of pure love, you have no anger towards the people or forces for whom you are calling forth the judgment. You feel only love, and you are holding the vision that they will take the opportunity afforded by the judgment and turn themselves around. The simple fact is that everything that was ever created by God was created from the only begotten Son of the Father, namely the universal Christ consciousness. Therefore, all souls have a Christ potential and the Living Christ is lying dormant within the soul.

Basically, you cant stand on a faulty platform. Better yourself, look inward, strive towards the teachings of Christ, and stand without sin before the Father. THAT is our goal as Christians

K. L.
Kayte, you should write a book. This is an arguement I have engaged in many a time. If you don't mind, I will quote you if the occasion arises again.

J. R.
so...is everybody against the truth of scripture here?

K. L.
Nobody is against the truth of scripture. The point is that the way people may interpret or apply scripture may vary based on a persons life journey and experiences, and even the place they are at in their life. E.G.: John 3:16 was just a nice phrase to me in high school, but now knowing and loving my niece as I do, I understand the full magnitude ... Read Moreof God sending us His Son. The key is not to cast judgement on others, but to tell them the truth and let them make their own choices. That is the beauty of free will. And in the end, only God can know our hearts and the reason behind our choices and beliefs.

This is a well-timed scripture. Loved it.

So was the argument about being a Christian (political) liberal? For some reason I was thinking liberal theology.

In other words, whats the point/topic of discussion of the thread other than the usual "Intolerant religious person shouts down reason?"

I love how when ever you quote scripture to a Christian it is called "that is taken out of context" but when they do the same little soundbiting, then of course "Scripture is truth!"

Like everytime they mention how prayer should be back in school and you tell them to read Matthew 6:6 and follow their own scripture.

being a Christian is believing in Jesus Christ and what he taught. Nothing more, nothing less.

Light Flantastic
07-21-2009, 05:08 PM
well you can tell yourself that but its not going to help you when you're in hell for breaking all of gods rules because you decided to pick and choose at your leisure

by my definition then following what Jesus taught is all God wanted people after Jesus' coming to do. I don't see what I have theoretically missed.

Old Testament law become irrelevant with the coming of Jesus but i thought this was basic.

Anyone who takes the bible or any holy book literally on any level is doing a great disservice to society. I mean, we have extremists out there who represent every religion, and then people who say they happen to be religious but aren't trying to hurt anyone just wanna live their lives the right way yada yada. Well it is those people who give legitimacy to extremists.

Like, with American Idol. There are people who are absolutely in love with it, and then there are people who tune in every once in a while. Now, all us normal people know that AI addicts are insane, but they can just look at you and be like hey man its the pretty much the highest rated show ever so whos the idiot now.

It really doesn't matter if they follow the bible strictly or not because its all a big fairly tale anyway Q.Q

you cant blame an actual retard for taking the bible literally just like you cant blame them for trying to hold a conversation with the oven

you can however blame a person who is reasonable enough to know the bible is dumb but still clings to it

everything in the bible existed before the bible since it pretty much stole from all the religions before it

well from my knowledge, Mormons dont believe jesus died for our sins and in the bible somewhere it states that you shouldnt change anything in the bible or believe in other prophets. but the mormons pretty much took the bible and added and misconstrued parts. also they believe in many prophets. also, Joseph Smith made all this bullshit up anyway lol

Yah Joseph Smith made up names that just sounded like Hebrew to him but don't actually mean anything it's pretty much the 19th century equivalent of black ghetto people naming their kids Shaqueefah or whatever because they think it's Arabic

what exactly makes you think mormons aren't christians?

I'm going to go with denial of the Trinity.

Which is not entirely fair, since it begs the question. At most you could say they aren't mainstream Christians for although the identify themselves as Christians, they don't conform with pretty much everyone else's definition.

whats the point of being religious and not having double standards
