A 747 jet is placed on a treadmill the size of a runway. The treadmill is designed to exactly match the speed of the airplane's wheels (sensors and such). Under these conditions, will the (jet) engine still be able to lift off? Or will it be stuck in an endless takeoff?
EMH I want your opinion on this.

emh youre right
because its on a treadmill its not going to move anywhere so there will be no air flow across the wing which provides the lift, so no lift = no takeoff

it is actually not quite that simple I stole it from a thread on another board which is full of arguments that that have been going for about 7 or 8 pages, many websites being cited that claim to have done research proving it one way or the other and even mythbusters tried it but apparently theres a whole legion of people who believe they conducted the test wrong, are you sure prime possum?
i thought maybe EMH could sort this mess out.

yeah ive seen the arguments too and i know its not that simple, but you did post a simplified version of the question (excluding some assumptions about friction and stuff). from what i know and remember the issue is it being a jet engine, but in my head the engines are propelling the plane along the treadmill, but since the treadmill matches the speed of the plane forever the plane wont actually move anywhere. i mean, if i stood on a treadmill, held my hands out like wings and ran really really fast (probably faster than physically possible for this to really be evident) i would feel any airflow over my hands because they arent moving relative to the air, hence you arent gaining any lift
Meatplow
07-13-2009, 12:24 AM
also the plane hitting the handles of the treadmill is a concerning problem to me

Stevie VII
07-13-2009, 01:07 AM
its not the speed of the wheels that makes a plane lift you dummies it's the air flowing over the wings
on a treadmill there's no wind going over so it's not going to take off.
throw a 150mph wind into a 747 and it'll takeoff stationary
Meatplow
07-13-2009, 02:14 AM
wouldn't the treadmill be forcing it forward in the same manner that its wheels and motor operating it force it forward i'm confused
