as of late, i've kinda been breaking away from what i usually listen to, and most of the new music ive discovered is what we'd call an acquired taste. think: Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart, Lateralus and 10'000 Days by Tool, plenty of death metal including Death and Malevolent Creation, and good ol'e delta blues. very different styles of music but all are considerably difficult to really get into without a lot of exposure or dedication to listen. anybody else really dig music that is "an acquired taste" to most people?
elitist garbage itt
edit - lol at tool being an "acquired taste" band

you'd be suprised. they're actully not new to me at all. ive listened to (and loved) tool for several years now, but i figured i'd throw them into the mix anyway. i guess they kinda count for a lot of people, cuz those who are used to the 3:45 garbage the radio plays will have a hard time getting over songs 8 and 10 minutes long.

you are very right about trout mask replica. never had I found an album that was so head ache inducing and downright awful on first listen become one of my favourite albums

There have been an awful lot of plebs I have met throughout the years that when it comes to one of those group discussions about metal cannot seem to distinguish any kind of structural difference between two metal songs or even two sections of the same metal song (bad, sloppy metal or not), proclaiming boldly amongst themselves and their other top 40 listener friends that "it really just is noise". Of course, trying to argue on any level that structures can be quite intricate is just not possible as I have been laughed at scornfully for even suggesting such a fallacy. I don't know what to put this phenomenon down to, there must some psychological barrier that requires some kind of familiarity and stops these people from actually hearing whats there until they have "broken it in", I suppose.
I often wondered that if I introduced them to a genre that actually is just noise their head would explode. Or would they just call it metal, idk.
