View Full Version : Top Instrumental and Post-Rock Bands

I would say my top bands would be Grails, Mono and Pelican.
Grails really caught my attention this past year. Everything they have done is great, I love how they use so many different instruments. They change up middle eastern influences to blues to Latin, it's all over the place. For the softer side I would say Mono is the best there is. The orchestra on the new album is beautiful. Pelican doesn't really fit the post rock label they tend to get. They kind of have their own blend of riffs and atmosphere, I guess they will just get the Post-Metal label. They ruled live with Isis, just caught them last week. I'm loving the Geometry of Murder cover from Earth. Speaking of Earth I guess we can list Drone bands, it's closely related in some cases.

I disagree, Grails is much more interesting to me and Russian Circles. I'm talking about instrumental rock meatplow.
Which brings me to mention the Bakerton Group. El Rojo is a great album for the summer.

3nd is the best instrumental (not quite) post rock band out there. I recommend you all check out their mini-album View From Here as it's superb.
As far as actual post-rock goes, my favorites are Yndi Halda, 65daysofstatic and Caspian. It's a very subjective genre though and everybody seems to have their own favorites.
And in terms of instrumental rock that's not post-rock at all, Natsumen>every band out there

Seriously? Why? It's so fun.
My favorite would be Godspeed You! Black Emperor but I don't see them as post rock that much tbh
so then I have to agree with Grails, the band is outsantding.
Thank god no one has said EITS yet.

I saw Mono when they played one of 2 dates in the US with an orchestra. Maybe it was an off night, or maybe it was because I was worried about my girlfriend who wasn't feeling well, but for whatever reason they were really bad. It also could have been they were turned up to the point that you couldn't distinguish anything, and that it was entirely static.
mono is pretty good, i like aphasia and explosions in the sky
forgot to mention mogwai and god is an astronaut

First post here, so I'll state my bias that I lean towards postrock with a stoner/psych edge to it. I can't say that the bigger names of isis, Pelican Grails or others top the list for me lately. Top 5 post albums for me in the last year+ are:
Black Math Horseman - Wyllt (CA - produced by Kyuss' Scott Reeder)
Ahkmed - Distance (from Australia, on Elektrohasch)
Creature With The Atom Brain - I Am The Golden Gate Bridge (Belgium - I haven't heard their new one, Transylvannia)
Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound - When Sweet Sleep Returned (CA - I actually like their earlier 2 albums, the s/t and Erkanoplan, better)
My Sleeping Karma - Satya (Germany - maybe more psych/prog than post, but such a beautiful album. Anotrher Elektrohasch release, the label run by Stefan of Colour Haze).
