It's funny that oasis is winning despite everyone's overwhelming hatred/indifference towards them.

nahh mate, its not that both bands suck. if you listen to blur properly, instead of dismissing them based on hearing parklife and song 2 than youll realise that they have great elements of raw punk and soft whimsicalness to them.

stephen street doesnt make things sound like a wet turd. its the opposite! he produced the smiths for ****s sake! - the band with the most twinkly bits of silvery percussion and thin and light guitar parts

also I like both Blur and Oasis. they both have boring stuff as well as good stuff. but "Coxton's album" are good enough for me to vote Blur over Oasis.

Blur wins by a mile. I like Oasis, but the Gallaghers are both cunts, and a lot of their music sounds the same. Blur aren't afraid to experiment, and they're just generally the better band. And I have a thing for Damon Albarn
any band > The Clash

I don't think anyone actually said this..
Either way, britpop would fall under the alternative genre if we're being picky about it.

no it's just pop or rock. Hüsker Dü is alternative.

Er well he is. Whats Gallagher ever done??? Written the same chord sequence fifty times with a slightly different pentatonic 4 note melody. What a talent!
Coxon is inventive, ingenoius, he thinks outside of the box, uses effects to good use, writes different styles.
yeah coxon is an awesome guitarist one of the gallaghers even said it

Err and you're comparing two mediocre guitarists.
Coxon is a good guitarist, of course, and more often than not he is better than Noel, but to say 'he is the best guitarist of the past 15 years' is nonsense.

At no point did I say that. I said that "he is renowned as one of the best guitarists of the last 15 years.
Plus, just because you can play quickly doesnt mean youre good. Inventiveness is key.
For me, Johnny Greenwood, John Frusciante, Tom Morello, matt bellamy, etc etc etc are in a totally different league - but i still think Coxon is a brilliant inventive guitarist; in a totally different league to Noel.

And at no point did I say anything about playing quickly
And 'renowned' by who exactly? I personally have never seen anything that renowns Coxon as 'one of the greatest', 15 yrs or otherwise....then again I don't read NME (or garbage like Kerrang! before you say anything).
If we were to talk about modern guitarists, well I would agree in Bellamy, Morello, Frusciante to some extent.... Jack White has also written some fantastic riffs (though I'm not a fan of White Stripes) and I could spout on about metal guitarists but lets not get out of context! Oh, and Radiohead, dunno their guitarists names (except Thom Yorke) but they're a very talented band.
There is no doubt Coxon > Noel so lets move on.

yes yes, Johnny Greenwood of radiohead. i too agree with jack white.
Even Gallagher has acknowledged Coxon's skill for being able to write diverse guitar parts etc.
Many "critics" of music (who I hate by the way) regard Coxon as a guitar "hero" (for some reason) of the last 15 years.
Personally, I think that a lot of music these days is chord driven utter passionless drivel. I love the fact that Coxon challenges this by constantly experimenting to look for new ways to play the guitar etc.

While, I do not make accusations that there are those here who have 'sophisticated' taste in music, or are by all accounts pompous, arrogant and self-involved. Really, the reasoning behind why a band is better than another, is personal preference. Something, that neither person a, nor person b; can ridicule person c over, at least not without appearing to be an arrogant close minded individual.
I personally prefer Oasis, not only on the simple matter that: Whats the story (Morning Glory), being the defining album of the 'Cool Britannia' Era, but on the simple matter that it is the music which I grew up with.
Similarly, as my parents or older people, will undoubtedly have warm feelings about bands such as Duran Duran, something that the generation of today, will seek to reprimand to be of little musical value. Music, is a matter of personal taste. If you value the sound of New Wave over Hip-Hop, it is simply that, a matter of personal taste; and it isn't a matter of a person being better, on the matter that one likes one over another.

Blur has more good songs than Oasis, but Oasis' good songs are great. Oasis wins for me, both aren't that great though. The Clash > both those bands.
Way to go mention a band that has absolutely nothing to do with the thread. At least the mention of Pulp was of the time.
And for the record I think Oasis. Both bands can slip into mediocrity but Oasis have so many great songs to balance it out. Blur can't compete.

There really is a lot of Oasis hatred these days isn't there? Everytime they release an album it's always compared to their first two and hailed as **** because it's not as good as them, even though their recent releases, if you look at the albums objectively, are always in the top 10 albums of the year.
Also as a side note, I know the guy's a prat but what do people think of Liam as a vocalist? Live he's not up to much these days but on their most recent album 'Dig out your soul' he completely overshadows everything on the album with his powerful performances.
lwatkins
10-20-2009, 12:20 PM
Just cus theyre in the top ten, doesnt mean theyre worth anything. That renders them even more subjective.
Plus, I'll admit Albarn isnt the greatest vocalist. But he's slightly better than Liam, and he's a far better lyricist.
