View Full Version : Are my tastes those of a normal person?

Ok, I hate the movies from the Harry Potter, the Narnia chronicles and the golden compass sagas as well as the fellowship of the ring. So last week-end, a friend of mine convinced me to watch the second and the third movie of the ''Lord Of The Rings'' saga, claiming that they are much better than the first one, which I almost fell asleep on. I watched the second movie with my girlfriend yesterday, and complained about how boring it was until the final battle, which I didn't enjoy that much and was way below my expectations. It seems I am the only person in the whole world who just can't stand watching more than 30 minutes of any movie of the ''Lord Of The Rings'' or even the ''star wars'' sagas. I ****ing hate both of these series and people keep telling me that my tastes are too complicated. No matter where I go, if there's people discussing movies, it always seems there's someone who mentions one of these series and I'm the only one to complain about how I don't like them. Am I the only one here too!?
Btw, I'm not whining here and trying to start a debate, but just curious to see if somebody else shares my opinions.

Narnia is bad but I enjoyed the HP movies and I'm a Lord of the Rings fan so. Idk, maybe you have a short attention span.

Sorry, English is not my native language and I don't know what you mean by ''short attention span''... Do you mean that I can't watch long movies? If so, then know that I've enjoyed long movies in the past, such as Pulp Fiction and Der Undergang. So the length of these movies is not what bothers me.

Well the movies you listed fall roughly in the fantasy genre, so maybe you don't like fantasy/adventure movies.

which is why you can't sit through anything that doesnt interest you, people that are depressed aren't really into anything at all

i've never seen star wars. however, i really really enjoyed the lord of the rings. I had read the books prior to seeing it though, which really piqued my interest in the movies. They captured the books nearly to the "T", if I do say so. I remember seeing Gollum and thinking, wow this is exactly how I pictured him.

Nah don't worry about me, I don't. I have actually watched all of the star wars movies and two LOTR so far, so when I said that I can't watch over 30 minutes of any of them, I meant it figuratively.
what movies do you like?
Quite a lot actually: fight club, 28 days/weeks later, lock stuck and two smoking barrels, all of the aliens movies, the downfall, pulp fiction, the Schindler's list, cube (a Canadian movie), Doberman (a French movie). Lately, I saw X-Men Origins: Wolverine and really enjoyed it. There are many more but those are the ones that come to mind first.
I like Lord of The Rings a lot. I read two books, and movies fine as well.
Well, I enjoyed the movie Beowulf, and the reason for this is that a few weeks before the movie came to theaters, I had to read the poem for an English class. Maybe that if I had read the LOTR first, I would have enjoyed the movies.

That's exactly my opinion. I don't think they are the worst movies I've ever seen, but I guess I was disappointed because my expectations where so high.
Anyway nobody has answered my main question so far. I know by now that I dislike Fantasy movies, but is there anyone here who shares my opinion. I'm just asking out of curiosity...

Realise that everything is a subjective illusion and that camp appreciation and post-modernism killed any pretensions of art. Then you will understand everything blows dicks but that is precisely why it all works so well.

06-08-2009, 06:19 AM
if it was a registered trademark thing in the US then naturally it only matters in the US. plenty of stuff is affected by the retarded laws over there. among the more famous cases you have the heavy metal revival band HIM.
Matt?
06-08-2009, 06:25 AM
i don't know HIM
christsimpson
06-08-2009, 06:37 AM
they play classic heavy metal in the vein of Black Sabbath with 80s goth and modern mainstream rock touches- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfb74e9F5WQ, but that's not really the point. the point is that there's an American band that has registered HIM as a trademark, which forced them to release their albums under a different name (HER) in the US. they later bought the rights for the name in the US.
