View Full Version : The *New* Tonight Show

JohnXDoe3
05-31-2009, 03:32 PM
Well we have a couple of Conan threads around but since the day has finally arrived I thought an all new one would be good to discuss / comment on his first week as host of the venerable Tonight Show. The big cheese of late night talk shows.

Leno is finally gone (good riddance you hack) and Conan steps in. Saw him on Friday's Tonight Show and he looks ready. Trim, fit, maybe even a little tan.

They have a new studio, brought most everyone with them, and hopefully he will return The Tonight Show to its elite standing among late night talk / variety shows. Although he has to go up against Letterman now.....thanks to the miracle of the DVR i don't have to choose between the two. Sweet.

So yeah...Conan 'O Brien's Tonight Show. Hope he has a good first one =]

If the set is any indication I would say they are off to a good start, as it has the "classic" Tonight Show flavor imo.

JohnXDoe3
05-31-2009, 03:51 PM
yeah the date sort of snuck up on me. June 1st is here already....and Jay did his show up until the last day. which imo is sort of strange, as there really is no "lead up" time to build anticipation to the new show / host

i forgot all about it tbh. but i am excited to see it as well. i expect much of the same...its Conan after all. but it will be interesting to see what changes have been made, too

he is doing the show from Universal City / Studios. so i hope they don't go too "Hollywood." which is what Jay did with the Tonight Show. i don't want to see Conan at Citywalk "interviewing" tourists like Jay did. that was lame imo

Pop music sucks

I don't think it will be Conan O'Leno. I'm guessing that it will still have the hijinx of Conan's Late Night.

<3<3<3
05-31-2009, 04:06 PM
I don't think he will. They both have different styles. Conan is way more goofy.

I liked them both really. I'm glad conan will be back.

That was great. The Andy Richter thing was a little weird, kind of a Letterman/Schaffer dynamic, only not nearly as creepy and irritating. Plus he was a non-factor after the opening monologues. The set looks a little...I dont know. It looks like an American flag.

it was good. best opening ever. didn't care much for the tram bit...and Max and band were barely glimpsed.. i'm sure they will work it all in, though

the set, studio, Conan...looks like they hit the ground runnin'

i like Andy. those guys are supposed to be dry, anyway. just someone to look at and talk to. he was personable. and a little more animated then i recall

JohnXDoe3
06-03-2009, 07:12 PM
i enjoyed last nights (Tuesday) show a lot. Green Day were really good, and Tom Hanks was a good guest. looks like he had some "work" done on his face, though. nothing extreme, but a face lift, perhaps? he kinda looks like a mini Arnold Schwarzenegger. or at least his brother. i thought...

i liked they showed more of the band, but the audience is a little annoying with all the hooping and hollering at any little thing Conan does. first week stuff, i guess

my favorite part was the "Rodeo Road" bit. when Conan said he was going shopping on "Rodeo" i was thinknig the worst. more Los Angeles celebrity / trendy stuff like Jay used to do. but instead we found a tall goofy white guy in the heart of the ghetto and shopping at Urban Outfitters. messing with our ethnic population, catching people and himself off guard. i thought it was great and he should do more from the more common communities in Los Angeles like that

i think the show is great. more then i had hoped for

Conan is more reserved but still gives the old cues. and he is still zany. also, idk if anyone really gives him too much credit for being good at physical comedy. he doesn't stumble over and do falls and bits, really. but the way he moves and his lanky body just make him odd in a good way. and he uses it well

andy is great, i think. the writing, the bits, everything works. and as an interviewer he even made Dana Carvy seem interesting and funny. which is pretty hard to do

my fave moment recently was the HAIR performance by the Broadway cast. that was some great live stuff, i thought

of the funny stuff....just all of it. and the little jokes. he had a Paris Hilton joke recently in a bit. something about "reverse cowgirl" and a position. comparing her saying to one in history. dumb bit....and just vv funny

i thought yesterdays show was the first "mediocre" one

Conan was too long and obvious in his "Ask Conan To Blow Up Your Car" bit (a Lexus promo, basically) but that wasn't the biggest problem

the problem was his first guest, Ashton Kutcher. a guy so lame even Conan, a good interviewer, could not make him interesting, funny, or remotely watchable

the second guest, a funny little asian actress....she was good. and did a great bit at the end of her appearance with a guitar

probably touring with bruce
yeah. final seven shows coming up and then a LONG break it would seem, as bruce has done two albums and two extensive tours in two and a half years with the band

so Max will be back for a good while. and good thing, too

bruce has been playing WHOLE albums lately so the shows are kinda special. max is an AWESOME drummer

isolation Max

when he isn't with bruce his teenage (18) son sits in with the band. he kinda "solos" toward the end. some drum rolls, flourishes, etc
