You guys remember my thread on writing, right? Well I'm almost done with my script and I'm starting to plan how I'm going to film it. Right now I'm after a good camera and any other equipment I'd need to film it.

So advise me and discuss. Or share projects you made with the rest of the class.

what's your budget?

if it's in the area of 2000+ you can get some solid equipment

Zero. My budget is zero.

Well, tbh I need a decent camera, just a regular one wont do, so I'm going to have to spend some money on it.

I own one of these, can't ask for a better camera (price wise)

lights are cheap, you buy them from hardware stores. get hold of the free standing renovators lights

as for sound you'll need to do some research, sound isn't my specialty :(

alright, for just basically a camera, if you can manage this it will do you good

there's a newer one out but you'd save a little if you can get one of these

That one sounds quite good. It even mentions being good for filmmaking. Plus I can get a refurbished one of ebay for under £300 ($480) if I'm lucky.

depending on how serious you want to take it i suggest reading a book like this before embarking on anything big. there are so many potential pitfalls it is staggering

I'm curious, how have you got your production set up?

I've been planning a 20 minute short for about 3 months now, i've been distracted by work etc but i've got it worked it pretty thoroughly. I haven't seeked anybody to work with yet and i'm stuck with plenty of technical limitations so trying to work within that structure will be a challenge.

It's been hard to get a good group of people lined up to film it with me for a good price. I write and direct it but when it comes to some of the technology aspects of it I'm kinda ignorant. Just had to take the time to set up a budget and I've been fortunate enough to have things come my way. For instance, I'm friends with the head of an independent film company in the Dallas area and he read my script, saw that I needed a casket for a funeral scene, and informed me that his father runs a funeral home. Normally a casket is expensive just to rent but I will have one provided for me for free out of sheer luck. And I wrote most of the scenes according to locations I knew I'd be able to use for little or no money(friend's homes, couple small venues, etc.).

It can be a challenge and a real pain in the *** but it's been worth it so far.

I didn't even know you could rent caskets. That's a little weird. What's next? Hire the suit you bury the guy in? When they come and retrieve it from the ground do you get your deposit back? Do they charge by the day or the hour? Do they offer a discount if only 50% of the casket is filled?

Oh man, I got hundreds of these!

err...

when a person get cremated, they don't burn the casket...

that only happens in the movies

Does anyone have any recommendations as far as books/tutorials/software for learning the basics of writing screenplays? I'd like to get into writing but I'm not quite sure of how to really start and the kind of formatting that is acceptable.

Any advice on this kind of stuff?

I just looked at a few pro scripts, found some bits n pieces through google about writing and just started work on it.

I have The Screenwriter's Bible, which covers writing spec scripts (to sell). It goes over story structure, writing for a visual medium, script formatting, various means to shop it around or otherwise get noticed, and just an all-around great how-to for writing screenplays.

I found Amazon to be pretty helpful with reviews on many books, and you can always check out local bookstores and libraries to browse most of them.

As for software, CeltX is a free writing program that's already formatted for a script, or other mediums should you choose those. It's really good and very intuitive in its use.

I've been needing a book on the subject so might look into The Screenwriter's Bible, thanks. Amazon does indeed rule for looking up books on these subjects.

this. i also recommend downloading various award winners to get a feel (heavily suggest silence of the lambs which is easily found through google).
