Open Water Swimming

Anyone else do open-water swims? I'm talking 2 or 3km swims between beaches and islands. Seems to be not much discussion of swimming on here which is sad. Post away.

i did a lot of competitive swimming growing up and was forced to stop at 13 because of an injury and i've just started picking it up again with serious training - though only in pools, not open water
i haven't tried open water swimming properly before but maybe i should because i am more a distance swimmer than a sprinter - my better events were the 400m and 1500m races. typically i swim about 6km per day in a pool.
how do you train for open water swimming?

Yeah the Pacific is kinda dangerous to swim in so I don't do it.

I swim in rivers in lakes though, but not very far..
