You know, a far more immersive postulation of what sort of games you would play, citing examples, would greatly increase suggestions, rather than just stating "play games". Tell us your current specs.

if you are getting nVidia get 7xxx or 6xxx, because the newer ones have terrible 2D issues on any os that isn't Windows XP. it's better on Windows Vista than on any non-Windows os, but still not too good.
we are seeing nVidia going more and more proprietary, whilst ATI are opening up. maybe you should just get an ATI chipset.

Sure, get a 7xxx if you want a slow and outdated card. =\
This here is your perfect choice.

The ati equivalent would be the Radeon HD 4870 X2, but it's 80 more dollars. It performs on par, better, or worse depending on the resolution and AA level.

I'd get the GTX 285 personally.

9800 GT's are around $120 CAD. great card for the money. Sjhould handle most anything you put at it.

I have 9600GTM. it is awesome at 3D. horrible at 2D. I get random crashes if I don't use loose bindings, and I the pictures "hangs" if I don't use indirect rendering.

well $300 US will get you a fairly top notch card these days. ThisGuy has given you some excellent choices above that fit your budget
if you're thinking of being more modest or saving a bit of money, however...a single nvidia 9800GTX+ will run you around $130 US these days, give or take. an ATI 4870 maybe $30 more according to newegg
both very capable choices depending on your current and future needs and priced very nicely for the performance
i like the nvidia myself

i can only recommend an 8800GT, because its what i have, and for £50 it was an utter bargain
