to get her (u goin) - 5 15
mm this took a day or two or more or something can't be too sure
anyways it's got some samples from this real nice record i bought, mccoy tyner, i saw the man play two years ago oh my
beat is 5 bars cycle which is interesting
trying to get a bigger sound
this track is supposed to be like falling down a spiral stair in a peaceful jumbly manner
http://www.box.net/shared/d8te39ypcs
sayin you do - 5 11
i got some vocals on this one and a few samples off some records, has my live drumming debut, and the bass played
good vibe i think i like this
http://www.box.net/shared/y5t782311p
Head Sing Rush - 5 03
heres my latest beat a lot more textural things to it and its a more compositionally developed piece, and definitely more of what i like to make, slower midtempo almost passively chilled groove
http://www.box.net/shared/k5phib6kt8
Astrononical Miles - 5 02
a sample taken from Miles Davis Sketches of Spain
its interesting to use one song for the samples the production sounds besides the instruments stay the same, kinda of a difference, anyways i used a percussion line chopped and some horn bits, a had some real spanish spliced horn parts but they were too spicy and didnt mesh. though getting this to mesh with any sort of beat is kinda hard i think but i tried for the sake of it
overall i think its kind of what im going for even though im not exactly sure what it is but i hoped to take these different elements (instruments textures) and adjust on their own accordingly to make it spacey taken individually and maybe that shows
i like the rhythm though i hope to expand on this syncopated feel ive spent lots of energy trying to get right
ty for listening if u do

I kind of dig where you're going with the semi-broken beat type thing, but I don't know...
Maybe if you got the drums to sit a little behind the beat for a more laid back feel?
It's just personal opinion, but especially with the really chill eastern horn sounding sample, the percussion tracks seem to have too much of a forward motion for me, if that makes sense.

It's just personal opinion, but especially with the really chill eastern horn sounding sample, the percussion tracks seem to have too much of a forward motion for me, if that makes sense.Yeah I get this a lot, but maybe it's because it's not necessarily a hip hop groove, I'm using a lot of different influences than beats, or you're right too there is a bit of a edge regardless but I think I'm cool with it and is probably what I'm trying to do.
I'm actually feeling this bro, nice percussion
no homo but whats your first name?Yeah, the perc and groove are really what I focus on.
I'm Jordan, sup
I enjoyed it a lot. I've been interested in trying to make beats, do you just learn through trial and error?
In the sense that I've learned on my own yes, using the internet to read, books, it's part of my overall study of music, and from there it's easy to know where to experiment when learning how to produce beats. In producing beats, the technique of mixing, effecting, and basically layering the technological ideas is equally improtant as composing.
In a certain sense the computer and audio engineering are forms of musicianship because they're handle sounds.. especially in the digital age where technologies and culture are converging.
So yeah trial and error but I make sure I make the right mistakes.
Thanks everyone for checking it out.. :-]

i like a lot of your ideas. its like you still need a few months or awhile of practice, because some of the stuff still sounds a little weak. the beats and everything are usually pretty nice. its just you have problems with everything sounding together and the fact that some of the parts sound kinda dead or flat.
its obviously something that would take anyone awhile and you have an impressive start especially since i remember your old beat stuff and this is so so much better.
(*The Noonward Race*)
05-04-2009, 03:08 PM
for real, mixing is equally a skill as writing and playing (sampling or midi) and i know it's gonna be months like you said or years to get where I'd like to be, and learning this I really don't spend enough time making a piece with cohesive parts or worrying about 'it meshing' like people said.
yeh im a little a head of people who just straight out start on beats because i've been a musician for years in classical and jazz settings and then again it means i'm not going to be going for a purely hiphop sound and it might be distracting

I think I preferred the first one, though I didn't listen to the whole of the second, only parts.

I think the first one is better too, the melody line is really catchy but I have to say the percussion part doesn't sit right with me.
I'd like to hear that one rapped over I think it would sound neat.
(*The Noonward Race*)
05-05-2009, 05:39 PM
personally i like the second one it's more what i want to go towards
yeah man i would love to hear someone rap over any of my beats for sure
im not gonna put this one in the main post its justa quick thing made from the youtube video aaron linked me to

i like that you can feel the beat, but the beat isn't actually played. however it is annoying in a way too. not chill music, but most certainly respectable

thanks sir for the response
but it's sort of cluttered itt i can't who's responding to which piece
I would be interested to see if there's a good rapper lurking on MX somewhere.eventually i know im gonna step up and write some stuff but that's not to say it's gonna anything but just me trying to get my ideas out (in a non experienced rapper way)

the opening textures are nice, very tastey. I like the way you use your voice and the leves, just loud enough to hear what your saying, but it mixes right in with the instrumental track.
My only gripe is that the bass is a little boomy, but nothing i would complain about if i wasn't being overly critical. The weird synth thing could be a tiny bit more rounded around the middle of the song for my taste too, but again, thats just me.
I really think the parts with the vox make this song. the whole things sounds fluent and articulate. I see a green part walking with your girl on an early summer day. Well done.

05-15-2009, 02:33 PM
Yeah, this new one is the best sound you've gotten so far. Quite cool honestly, the sampled loop is really nice. Some of the synths in the middle don't really do it for me but the drums and bass groove are nice. What are you using for drums in it?

Well done.i really hoped that that's what the vocals would do, bring the 5 bar cycle to some sort of point where it kind of suspends the resolution enough to support the groove all the way around

Everything was played on keys in this beat cept for the real textural background type stuff.

treecrack was tight, i like the off-step and the clean sounding click/clap. definitely feel like it's suited for an mf doom track. frostbitten is fun too, more straight forward hip hop. too short of a loop to be a lot of fun to listen to but i like it. weird snarly monster in background ftw
