^ Pretty cool. Pete Rock, Ma Dukes (jds mom) talk about him his work and life.

also there is Talib who sounds like an idiot, "like miles with his saxophone" LOL

This thread shouldn't need much work to thrive!

what would you guys say is his best besides donuts? i've heard a few of his productions elsewhere but am looking to expand my dilla collection, as it is severely lacking.

while i am in love with the idea of j dilla i don't like his production (or typically the rappers who have used his beats) at all

when it's not grating it's unsatisfying

(*The Noonward Race*)
04-24-2009, 09:20 PM
i like the syncopation and the way the samples are mixed texturally, almost exclusively.

the only rapper i ever had any interest in he worked with was baatin, and busta cause hes wacky

still tho im addicated to this music

check out flying lotus amit

yeh i tried to answer but i couldnt really cause its not really dilla apreesh

i remember you liking donuts about 2 years i downloaded it and it didn't hit me until months later when i was in the car being mad blunted and one of the fantastic interludes i think 4 from vol2 came on, the hook and the background vocal fills proved to me they were looking for some groove

(*The Noonward Race*)

Love (a thing of the past) is one of those beats that has like all of my favorite parts of his muse

this is like one of my top 5-3 songs dilla proly or otherwise too

the sampleeee

im listening to it now and i think i hear a another bassline beneath the other 2 bar one on the quarter notes, it's a 3 bar loop which is something that's really neat when the song is mostly based in 4, it's like whole note whole note eighth, low bass tones, i think that what helps get this dreamy shifty feeling form the thing since it really take at least 6 bars to repeat the bass motion
if you listen closely dilla plays with bar lengths a lotttt

pixiesfanyo
05-15-2009, 05:06 PM
yeah that is totally his thing.

We_Love_Lime
05-15-2009, 05:21 PM
Stakes Is High has a bassline like that.

Totally tripped out.

(*The Noonward Race*)
05-15-2009, 08:09 PM
mc squared used to be a 3 bar 12 beat pattern when he originally made it

on the the shining its 4 bars like a normal tune i love the hook now with the repeated notes and riggins prod

there are tonnes of examples in all his beat tapes and albums

Time
05-15-2009, 08:12 PM
i love his production on this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1l1WHjweEwE&feature=related

i think i should get that dillanthology compilation thing just so i have all his productions in one place

another little thing to notice about won't do is the chorus changes everytime he repeats displacing a 16th note and omitting 'it' from the hook

subtle shi like that

overall
you listen to his flow when he does verses he'll be all impressionistic here and there editing it in stereo up there down around syncopation

he had the flow this v dynamic thing with the rhythm as totally expected by his attention to groove in all his beat

mp im lsitening to one of the unrealesed beat tapes right now

Jay Stay Paid is probably the dullest thing he's ever been associated with. If you haven't heard the new Beat Konducta it blows it out of the water.
