Everyone is dressed better than I am.

It hasn't rained yet
they're complaining about the cold
that seems right.
and I think
that the goldrush couldn't have happened
anywhere else.

man on a bike in
red shorts and
ill-fitting
straw hat

to

a gentler water
a broader coast
noiselessly from
one hot asphalt
to another
and I remember the grass
how it cracked
under all my weight
there it was from the cold
here
the grass
is fine with me
cracking it.

the ocean can't intrude
with these clifftops
staring down as they do
capped only by the satellite birds
and man.

the industrial complex
could have been a city
or a rocket
the way it gleamed
but it was still
and I
was assured;
on my way to
Hollywood.

California
where would you be
if all we were dead?

a crescendo was building
as the smell
of some nameless vegetable
filled my head
farmhouse beautifully
like a junkyard song
sung by some gentle
ethnic minority.

the trees that point one
way remind me of me.

love it. the last two lines are awesome. also the part about the grass.

my only beef is the "ethnic minority" part. i would put in the nationality if it were me. these words seem sterile in a very real and organic piece.

mm. I had something like that in mind when I put that there. Poking some fun at west coast PCness. I've got something else I've got in my head. I'll post it in here when I finish it.

stopped
in line for
restroom at
Lucia Lodge
route 1
I think
that "waited"
sounds weird

-

wind pulling wheat
like water
grass sail to
fill my sky and
my eyes and
it is red near Marina
(the grass)
and is
so broken
in its growth

oh to be a bare spot
oh to be a red spot
along the bay
at Marina

to grow tall and
be cut and
grow tall and
wither in
brown orange
western sun
choking eyes all
with sweet
and sentiment

-

"Pardon me but
aren't you cold?"

laugh

"I am from New York."

I say

"Oh"

she says

"I've served my time."

but I
didn't hear that
until later

-

speak to me Leonard
the only man who ever loved a woman
words spilling
through San Francisco hotel room
especially off
my mirror
traveling blind
and packing
all the new
before the old
it is not sad
far too ever beautiful
sinking stones
and their
bubbles scattered so
peppered so
quickly through and then
out of my
dampened sight
