View Full Version : Rap In Different Time Signatures
BridgeToSolace

I'm kind of curious if this exists. I'm sure there's some rap 3/4 and 6/4 but I think it would be interesting to see how an artist flows with alternative or weird time signatures.
Are there any rap artists that are notable for not exclusively using 4/4 or 3/4?
I'm not very educated or well versed in the genre (although I'm not against), so feel free to call this a stupid question and move on :)

rappers don't exactly rap in different time signatures as they do, well, basically alter the speed and rhythm of their flow

progressive hip-hop? I wouldn't think there'd be anything like that, just because hip-hop is pretty well based around lyrical flow and groove.

Which is why it'd be neat if you could weave some lyrical groove around a non-standard time signature :p
And to the first guy it'd be awful if it was done poorly. Just like how any music is awful if done poorly.

no it would be awful no matter what
why? i think its something artists should definitely explore. It an artist can get a definitive groove down and a feel for the signature it'd create some awesome sounds

i think that would be cool, but kinda tough to pull off well. rap has been 4/4 since the dinosaurs

i want to see a 7/4 rap that plays off a 4/4 chorus that I can compare to the structure of several soundgarden songs

Candiria does a lot of non-4/4 stuff, but they also do a lot of metal. I wouldn't call using alternative time sigs "progressive" so much... i mean, i guess it is, but other qualities define that term in hip-hop.

It is progressive in the context of rap. The term 'progressive' just means going beyond the normal and in the context of rap alternative time signatures is certainly doing that.

from my last post, i meant to say that candiria does hiphop in non-4/4, not just metal. and it's not rap-rock either.
There are freestyles over the Hey Ya beat all over the place and that's got a bar of 3/4 every so often

Yeah, I've never heard any hip hop with a complex time signature.
It wouldn't be impossible but it would be very difficult, just a matter of adjusting to an appropriate meter. If there's someone out there rapping over 5 or 7 I'd be very curious to hear it.

there's probably a lot of potential in sampling
take five would make a dope beat
progressive is the worst term in music since "jazzy"
why people continue to label decidedly and unilaterally non-progressive artists, trends, and practices as "progressive" is beyond me
UGHHHH

The progressive thing is easy - don't take a genre name literally, something being "progressive" doesn't mean it pushes boundaries any more, what it means is that it fits the aesthetic of a style that at one time was considered to be progressive. I know it's annoying though that everyone thinks having a 20 minute song makes you progressive or whatever, but hey, the world is full of idiots, what can you do.

at one time was considered to be progressive.amit proly means that even then it's not really applicable
maybe a more interesting discussion is about the perception of musical progress
