i'd say after TM&A, but then that album was one of those records for me that soundtracked a pretty hectic time of my life so i have loads of emotional associations with it. love modest mouse. This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About is fast becoming my favourite album of theirs, funnily enough.

Long Drive barely edges LCW in my book, and The Moon and Antarctica marked the beginning of a steady decline, though that one isn't too bad. I don't really listen to anything post TM&A at all.

I distinctly remember the first time I heard "Tiny Cities Made of Ashes" and my immediate thought was "what the hell am I listening to here?" It took me a while but they sort of grew on me, though I really do have to be in the right mood to truly enjoy them -- they're still a little off-kilter for my usual taste.

Honestly, this is what pisses me off.

Modest Mouse is always going to be my all time favorite band, but I always see "after *insert album name here* they weren't that good."

I think that's bullshit. They didn't start sucking. They changed their sound, and they grew up. If you actually do music and write your own material and whatnot, you realize that everyone eventually matures not only as a person, but as a musician. This is why all bands that were heavily emotional changed their style down the line. Nirvana did it, Deftones did it, Modest Mouse did it, countless others still do it.

The thing about indie people is that we don't like change. We don't welcome it, we want our favorite bands to sound the same forever, and the reason we do this with older bands is because subconsciously, we take a lot of pride in listening to our older, more underground music. The feeling that we get from listening to an album in which a band has experimented with their style of music isn't a "god this sucks" feeling, it's just indie kids being hypocritical and not listening to something because it's not what they're used to.

I'll admit that Good News for People Who Love Bad News sounded slightly half assed, but We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank was an amazing album. Fire it Up, We've Got Everything, Florida, Little Motel, most of the tracks on that album are amazing by today's standards, and by the same standards set place back in the 90s.

lol. its not that the later stuff is bad on its own, its just that it pales in comparison to the older stuff. its like dj shadow, all his **** after endtroducing was mediocre. or disillusion's back to the times of splendor. they couldnt top it and "changed" their sound. maybe the fact is that they moved away from the indie sound, so fans of indie didnt like it. youre a fan of modest mouse.

I love Interstate 8 a lot because it combines a lot of my favorite songs from other albums as well as some not found anywhere else. It's so good.

Sadly they are terrible live and don't play more than 2-3 songs from albums before Good News. Not worth the admission price.

that sounds pretty gay. i remember seeing a vid of them live where the mic shorts out and issac, who is obv intoxicated, decides to pull out a knife and cut the chord. he flails around and ends up slicing himself across the chest. it was pretty lol.

I do love Modest Mouse. That's sad they're not good live, you'd think by all that energy they create in the studio they could put on a fiery live performance.

I like all of their albums really, none of that "I don't like them after" stuff. Favorite songs include "Jesus Christ Was An Only Child", "Ohio", "Paper Thin Walls", "Parting of the Sensory", and "Cowboy Dan". Lots of good music from these guys in my opinion.

04-22-2009, 11:26 AM
its not that their later albums arent that good, (they all warrant about a 3 or 3.5/5) its just that the drop off in quality after lonesome (maybe m&a) was immense.

I really liked We Were Dead Before... just as much as their old stuff. I don't think its better or worse, it's just different. And they still rock.

I mean, how can a band acquire Johnny Marr and get worse?

Supernewman
04-28-2009, 06:02 AM
I really couldn't listen to them after Isaac Brock raped that chick.

That was never confirmed, and Brock still claims he never did it. I wouldn't put it past anyone to claim rape after a drunken mistake or even afterwards regretting having done it anyways. Not to mention the guy signed Wolf Parade to Sub Pop, that alone should counteract rape allegations.

Regardless personal details are no reason to not listen to a band or not. True music fans should be discouraging that sort of papparazzi, stars lives on the news, garbage. Having an idea of what influences their music is one thing, but following their lives and judging the music on their personal choices is another.

But on the topic, I think emaillovesyou is totally right, most people on here only like up to TM&A, some not even that far. Interestingly enough Good News and We Were Dead made it in the top 20 on the Billboard Top 200, whereas TM&A made it within the top 200, around 120. So the base of fans for the albums seems to drop a bit when the albums makes it on the Billboard Top 200 and almost completely drops when it's in the top 20? Seems like a confirmation of what emaillovesyou to me, personally I love Modest Mouse and like all of the albums, but prefer the latest three.

A few months ago I read a book called "A Pretty Good Read" by Alan Goldsher about the band. Not too detailed but it was indeed a good read, lots of cool tid bits and whatnot.

guitarded_chuck

The Lonseome Crowded West is my favorite album of theirs, but to be honest they haven't put out much material that I don't like. Even the newer albums have their ups and downs. Their newest album is the weakest to me, but like I said even it has some good songs.

I didn't know there was a book written about them... might have to check it out.

Supernewman
04-29-2009, 10:16 PM
But that whole signing business is irrelevant.

That was ultimately my point, hence why I said regardless of that their personal lives shouldn't affect if we listen to a band or how we as listeners accept the music.

What I was trying to say is that for as many things that people do which may be irritating, say having rape allegations against them, there is probably something equally good going for them, say having signed a band that I personally enjoy. And when all these qualities are finally all summed up and put against the artist it won't change how the music sounds. All it can possibly do is provide an insight as to where the music is coming from, but again, that doesn't change the quality of the music itself.

Also, Arcade Fire is awesome.

Probably my favourite band if I had to pick one, top 5 at least. Long Drive, LCW, BNOoS and M&A are all excellent albums that I still listen to often. And between their last two albums, while not great as a whole, still have a handful of great songs.

my favorite band. good news was the first album i heard, bukowski, satin in a coffin, devils workday, all great songs. then i found their older stuff which was 10x better. ship even sank had some good tracks, march on, steam engenius, of course spitting venom, but a lot of those songs are real pussy compared to his old kickass stuff.

thats a great cowboy dan live vid with an extra verse thrown in at the end. ****ing amazing.

king rat is real good too i can't wait for their new album, No One's First and You're Next i guess it'll be called.

so, i went out and bought 2 modest mouse albums yesterday, and i'm really blown away. i'm mainly into punk, and relaxed isn't typically the feeling that most of the music i listen to evokes, but this **** puts me in a trance. i'm a little bummed, cause "this is a long drive home for someone with nothing to think about" doesn't have the bonus tracks on it. i was looking forward to edit the sad parts, but i can deal without i guess. great stuff.

I'm not super into their newer stuff, but I don't **** on it nearly as bad as a lot of their fans do. Its still fairly solid, and I wouldn't feel the least bit guilty about buying 'em.
