so i got the new doom last week when it came out, and im actually really impressed. i was kinda weary since its been about 4 years since he's released under just the mf doom name (doom now i guess). a tad bit too shohrt, but good nonetheless. anyone else hada chance to check it out yet? like it, hate it, not sure? what do you think?

it's okay. 'Cellz' and 'That's That' are the only real highlights.

idk i thought it was kinda boring at first but i gave it a full attentive listen, and i changed my mind real fast haha. standouts to me are:

absolutely
more ryhmin
rap ambush
cellz goes back to the doom that shows on the mm..food album and operation doomsday

supervillainz is interesting, and i was freaking out when slug came on, i definitely wasnt expecting him to collab with doom

the intro and outro i like a lot, i really think that the beat or sample whatever he used could be turned into a really sick song

This isn't specifically about the new MF Doom album, but back to basics....what's a good starter album if he's worthwhile to listen to?

Operation: Doomsday

Madvillain: Madvillainy... best doom stuff ever, and a hip-hop essential

Correction

madvillainy's the only doom album you'll ever really need, the only one of his i keep goin back to

Skyler

madvillainy stretches itself way too thin.

kingsoby1
04-01-2009, 09:45 PM
i basically adore madlib and would have his man babies.

so what i'm saying is, why/how could you say such a thing

Skyler
04-01-2009, 09:54 PM
don't get me wrong, it's a good album

but it's too long, there are too many skits/instrumentals, and it gets kind of bland/uniform at some points

there are some really good tracks on it, but when you play it from start to finish, the good stuff gets lost in the mix

that's why i say it stretches itself thin

niobium

i come close to despising doom. even for madvillain

Yeah, I can see that... the skits are really stupid at times. i just ignore them.
Albums with a lot of skits get to me too. I'm often turned off by albums which have 25 songs, 10 of them which are less than 30 seconds. It can ruin a solid album for me.

start of with mad villainy, vaudeville villain, or the mouse and the mask. those are some of his most favorably albums probably for a someone first listening. then i'd check out mm...food or operation: doomsday.

honestly in my opinion doom is one of the best, simply becasue his skill in producing AND rapping. the way he crafts his songs and beats is top notch. not only that but his ability to craft albums under all of his aliases (viktor vaughn, king gheedra, or just mf doom) with their own style but some how you can just tell its classic doom

Apocalyptic Raids

i'd start with operation doomsday or mm.. food (his best imo).

kingsoby1
04-02-2009, 12:12 AM
I'd say worthwhile doom projects, like everyone's basically said already, and in order:

Madvillain - Madvillainy
King Geedorah - Take Me To Your Leader
Mouse and the Mask
Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain
MF DOOM - MM.. Food
MF DOOM - Operation Doomsday
MF DOOM - Born Like This
Viktor Vaughn - Venomous Villain

i really think MM.. Food and Madvillainy (remix included) are his only highlights.

vaudeville villain is amazing...i tried to listen to mm...food and couldnt but then i got vaudeville villain and it got me into mm...food so much more, even though i think viktor vaughn is the better rapper (in a manner of speaking)
i havent listened to madvillainy yet but im probs gunna try again tomorrow and im gunna get dangerdoom's album tonight

and saliva is such an amazing song

Do any of you guys have Special Blends Vol 1? It's an album that MF Doom made in which he remixed a bunch of other artists songs. Really, really good.

i forgot who asked, but i have special blends, and all volumes of special herbs 1-0 (10). i also have just about every single thing by doom ever haha. so if anyone needs it just hit me up.

in regards to viktor vaughn, it seems like thats his more commercial side. he raps from a criminal aspect. i mean nothing he does is really commercial but its the closest to the mainstream rap topics.

I think that those that don't like this album compare it to his previous work versus other albums in hip hop. It's a 4/5 for me, barely, but it makes it there.

DOOM to me is like Tim Duncan in the NBA. Duncan is good enough that even though he doesn't always win a championship, he's puts out a good season by numbers (20 reb/10 points). DOOM is the same way.. he might not drop a Madvilliany every time.. but hey, this album is still dope, despite the obvious misses.

If you compare Duncan to the years he was MVP worthy, of course you don't think its a good season.. but he's still one of the best players in the league.. and DOOM's album is still a good album almost solely because he's one of the best out there. His mediocre work is on par.

My blurb: 4 Stars/7.6
Production: A- (3.2/4)
Lyricism: B+ (3.2/4)
Flow/X-Factor: C+ (1.2/2)

Overall: B+ (7.6/10)

I dig the beats individually, and I've always liked DOOM; but the two of them together could've produced something more enjoyable than this. Nonetheless, combining the best producers, a couple great Wu guest spots, and DOOM's consistent deliveries; you get a great album anyway. Classics tracks like "Gazzillion Ear", "Cellz", and "That's That" highlight an album with a high batting average, besides some empty swings.

the guest appearances are probably the highlight of the album.

illmitch
04-04-2009, 09:27 AM
yeah, which is always the sign of a mediocre album. i'll be honest, even the guest appearances didn't really get me - he got my two favorite rappers from the Wu-Tang Clan, and even that didn't do too much for me. not too good.

what do you mean?subject matter mostly. how he always starts rapping halfway through the first verse and continues on to the 2nd its really repetitive

It's not the best record he's ever done, but it's completely solid. New Doom is better than no doom at all.

Here is a cool interview

yeah i got ya, but i mean thats just his style really idk i find it interesting sometimes, but could do without some of the spoken parts. like cellz. i love the track and while the spoken piece is well done, id rather have that as a separate track then having to FF thru it sometimes

ok i have concluded that born like this is better than i thought before
some of the beats are a bit week and doom's vocals are sometimes too high in the mix
but that's that makes up for it
