View Full Version : DMV Reccomendations
The DC/MD/VA hip hop scene is not very well known and has always been overshadowed by Go Go. I thought I'd give you all a few suggestions of some of the artists that are doing interesting things and are worth checking out.
The most famous DMV rapper right now is Wale. People either love or hate him, I personally think his hype is warranted.

How about Clipse? New album coming out...
Clipse are from VA Beach which isn't really considered DMV. They are sweet, though.
Grap Luva
Listen to Power Bars:

Grap Luva is a hip-hop producer and rapper primarily active during the 1990s as a member of the group INI (comprised of himself, Rob-O, and his brother, Pete Rock— who is himself a producer perpetually listed among the finest and most influential in hip-hop history.) His first appearance was as a guest on the track “The Basement”, included on Mecca and the Soul Brother (1992), the first album released by Pete Rock in tandem with his creative partner CL Smooth. He is noted for being among the vaunted lineup of producers involved with The Best Part, the debut LP by the rapper J-Live.

Wale is so dirty, I got this sick free DMV chillin shirt from commonwealth
Yeah, Wale rules. Do you hit up any hip hop shows in DC, dude? There is a great open mic on U-Street on Monday nights. My favorite place is Asylum on the first Thursday of every night. Free to get in, free cake and cookies, and MC's destroying it all night.
The DC/MD/VA hip hop scene is not very well known and has always been overshadowed by Go Go.
Can anyone explain for me what any of this means?
The area I live in is called the DMV which stands for DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

It's an umbrella term to refer mainly to the area surrounding Washington, D.C.
The hip hop scene is growing, but hasn't gotten much shine because of a type of music called Go-Go, which is a cross between funk and hip hop. It's an extremely localized music that has never really caught on outside of this area. The Godfather of Go-Go is Chuck Brown. Here is an example of Go-Go:

This scene has totally overshadowed DMV's hip hop scene since the 80's, but things are looking promising.

The event I am talking about is only the first Thursday of every month. It's fun as hell. Here's a video from the last one:

And Mambo Sauce isn't my favorite, but a good example of Go-Go.
Here's an example of some legit stuff:
