View Full Version : What is love?

I was laying on my couch reading the Atlantic monthly last night when my girl came up to me, needled herself into the gap between my back and the couch back, and put her arms around me. She didn't want to have sex, I asked and confirmed, she just wanted to 'latch on to me for a while'.

Fast forward to today's xkcd, and I started thinking about what is implied when someone says 'I love you'. When I say it, I'm declaring that I find you attractive on several levels and I reaffirm a commitment to provide you with companionship, affection, and support.

My question is, what do women imply when they say it? Do they declare themselves open to receiving said support? Is it a proclamation of a heartfelt emotional link? It's all quite vague.

love is placing the body back in the coffin afterwards, out of respect for the mourners

Love can be a happy and depressive addiction. I love music. It makes me happy and depressed.

Love is a bunch of chemistry and electricity in your nervous system which probably evolved because its powerful deleterious effects on people was an unfakeable display of devotion to a pair-bonding situation

Love is at best a chemical imbalance and a primordial cause and effect to assist in pro creation.

it's when you'd die for someone without thinking twice.

this doesn't benefit anyone

it's a hypothetical situation, but it's the highest price a human can pay, a price that can't be measured, just like love.

i don't love very many people.

GorgeousGabe

I wouldn't die for anyone I don't think

I mean there are extenuating circumstances, like if I'm ****ed anyway, but I wouldn't just outright give my life so that another can have theirs

Jaundice

I came into this thread just to make sure some one had already posted "baby don't hurt me."

I used to have this plan when i was little that I would give my life for anyone, but I'm cockier now. The number of people I would take a bullet for at this point could be counted on my fingers

GorgeousGabe
03-30-2009, 12:38 AM
I'd take a bullet for a lot of people but don't count on me dying for em outright. I'll take my chances with the bullet but if it came down to the ultimate hypothetical BS situation, **** it, take a walk, kill whoever you want cuz it won't be me

Taking a bullet is easy. I wouldn't take a shank for anyone.

GorgeousGabe
03-30-2009, 12:45 AM
I'd take a shank for a few people, even. the one I wouldn't take is a sledgehammer. **** that I'm out

Jaundice

I would sell out anyone for anything, commit any action or renounce any concept in the face of all out torture with sharp or heated objects, true story.

GorgeousGabe
03-30-2009, 12:53 AM
if someone is gonna torture you then yeah they're probably gonna win- unless you are like specifically trained to endure it you don't really stand a chance

Jaundice
03-30-2009, 12:56 AM
I would do everything in my power to withstand torture in some sort of interrogation, no matter how hard it is.

But the second I see sharp objects I'd stop acting tough. Or if anything with my eyes, dick or ass is even implied.

yeah well if you loved someone you would do it. and if you wouldn't then you don't really love them.
