Do you guys listen to music while doing work or studying or whatever you guys do? Does it help you concentrate, or does it distract you?
Do you have any bands or genres of music you like to listen to while working?

I listen to either Ambient House or some chillout classical such as Einaudi. But most of the time I want silence.

I listen to my last.fm radio at work. And I try and I listen to music while doing homework, but if I need to really concentrate I'll turn it down or make sure it's something without lyrics.

At my job we can't have the radio on because we have to be able to listen for certain things. But if I'm working around the house or the yard then I definitely have some music.

Nope. There's plenty of songs that are up for free and it builds a library based off of your listenings.

If you actually USE music to study, it can be very effective. Attach something you need to memorize to a rhythm and a melody, and you'll remember it in no time. When you actually need to recall that information, well... let me put it this way. Trying to remember some dumb **** some professor told you in class is a LOT HARDER than trying to recall a musical phrase.
You can hear a piece of music when you're a kid, not listen to it for your whole life, and then hear it when you're 80 and still know it

That being said it's not always good to listen to music for all kinds of work.
For me, the two kinds of work where music is a huge aid are the kinds of work where you're doing very mindless but monotonous tasks- eg, manual labor, moving boxes, setting things up, painting houses, printing t-shirts- OR music is very good for when you're doing very creative work that's specific to you, such as writing or drawing

When I listen to music whilst working I get distracted and just end up listening to the music.
I often listen to my mp3 player or YouTube at lunchtime or whenever it's not busy.
Pop music sucks

I listen to music when I'm writing, reading, or doing homework. Not when I'm playing video games.

No it's distracting. I've got to cut audio and video so music would just mess me up.

that is interesting...my friend was telling me that they did an experiment with musicians that busk in the subways. they took a world class classical violinist and put him there, and all the kids were found the music amazing, most of the adults didnt even notice
i always listen to radiohead when i'm writing a paper
you mean writing on a paper
you don't write a paper, you drain a dilute suspension of fibers in water through a screen, so that a mat of randomly interwoven fibers is laid down - water is removed from this mat of fibers by pressing and drying to make paper

I've heard of that one
that's because most people aren't trying to appreciate music on the subway. they are so unbelievably focused on whatever bullshit they are headed towards.
I always listen to buskers and I will pay according to how good they are... or at least, how good their music is
