Actually that's not correct. The melting pot is a distinctly American idea. The term implies assimilation of immigrants into the mainstream culture. That's not really a Canadian value. Here immigrants are encouraged to retain aspects of their cultures while respecting the national culture and those of other immigrants. We pride ourselves on being multicultural and accomodating.

My two closest Turkish friends and I look completely different from each other, and no one would ever be able to guess we were all born in the same country. In that sense, my origins can be traced back to Central Asia, and it's not hugely distant either. The last few generations of my family are Anatolian, but I know that my great-great-grandfather was not born in Anatolia, and before that neither side of family has any real connection to Anatolia. My father believes that they were part of an Ottoman plan of Turkifying the region in order to make us the majority, and were brought in from Turkic lands in the East. My physical features also give it away (high cheekbones, slightly pulled back eyes, thin, straight hair).
