View Full Version : the beauty of post rock music and the meaning of it

I gave the genre a break for a few months and today I was listening to explosions to the sky's album "All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone" and i realised how much i missed the genre. Post rock has a spiritual meaning to me but too much of it makes me depressed. I wonder whats in the mind of post rock artists when they make the music they do.

i found that album incredibly boring, it turned me off wanting to investigate post-rock when I first broke into the genre. i should revisit it though, I suppose, i've grown to appreciate the genre a lot

what a fruity thread.

hm, like a lot of bands more than them, and that album is meh, but whatever. genre's got some great artists.

i felt that the album grew on me as time went by.

Explosions in the Sky sound always the same to me. Fav. album by them is probably The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place. Fav. post rock bands are Crippled Black Phoenix and Red Sparowes.

Go and listen to Hammock. They make equally good post-rock to Explosions In The Sky. I only recently got into post-rock a year or so ago and it's fast become one of my favorite genres of music tbqh.

red sparowes are so good

never got into explosions in the sky

godspeed you! black emperor is awesome though, and i've been listening to the latest mono recently.

I can't really but Godspeed under post-rock tbh. And yeah latest Mono is good. Also God is an Astronaut is a pretty decent post-rock band.

Benzum
03-07-2009, 08:34 AM
Lights Out Asia is also as mellow as a relaxed banana that just randomly happens to be all yellow. The bad thing about these amazing bands is that many noob tube bands try and imitate the sound and there instantly becomes another excuse to make music in a minimal approach.

The last Mono album is the best post rock release in 2 or 3 years tbh. And EITS suck balls.

need to get that mono album

i've recently been listening to an album called the unbelievable cinematic crash by Sweek, amazing post rock.

They are one of the most boring, dull bands I've ever listen to.

But, hey! Nice album you're digging (Grouper)

Thanks but you're very wrong about EITS. Dimmu Burger I still got your bands EP or w/e on here, listened to it earlier, sounds good. What is your website?

Benzum

Yeah let's talk about post-rock. Apologies, good sir. The Angelic Process are a group that I listen to regulary and I've even tried to get into stuff like You.May.Die.In.The.Desert but they have yet to seduce me.

DBlitz
03-07-2009, 09:19 AM
The Angelic Process are good but I don't think they are post-rock.

Benzum
03-07-2009, 09:22 AM
Yeah you're right but a lot of alternative groups delve into post-rock nowadays so if you like atmospheric instrumental music then it's hard to categorize all of the bands. It's like the new black metal, without the murdering.

yeah, much better band than EITS haha.

Make sure to start with their first album.

Benzum
03-07-2009, 09:45 AM
That's probobally a load of garbage but whatever man I'll see what's in store. I'm lol'ing at you for finding fault with EITS, seriously that's hilarious.

Txus
03-07-2009, 09:50 AM
there's just so much better bands in the genre, I don't see why you cream all over EITS.

Benzum
03-07-2009, 09:52 AM
I'm not literally creaming over them but they are clearly amazingly gifted. Put the genre out of the question for a second, these guys made some incredible pieces of music.

Txus
03-07-2009, 10:00 AM
Hmmm, putting the genre out of question, i find even more bands or people who make more incredible pieces of music, so that didn't help. The problem with EITS is that they just don't move me like other Post Rock bands do (Mono, Gregor Samsa, Yndi Halda, Red Sparowes, GY!BE, Pg. Lost, Grails just to name a few).

Benzum
03-07-2009, 10:03 AM
GY!BE doesn't move me in the same way that EITS does, either. They both pluck my heart strings but EITS has more of an, indifferent approach. It's got a unique mellow delay swooning tone. Again I'm not creaming over them, just praising them. Until you say something bad about them we're cool.

Txus
03-07-2009, 10:10 AM
Unique? I just don't get it when you say they're unique but I guess it's all a matter of personal taste.

Benzum
03-07-2009, 10:16 AM
The melodies, the instrumentation, the song title, the production, everything. I get that you dislike them but as far as I'm concerned dude, there's nothing to dislike.

Angmar
03-07-2009, 10:20 AM
lol EITS are not unique or good.

Benzum
03-07-2009, 10:21 AM
Ha. That's hilarious.

RiceMonster
03-07-2009, 10:21 AM
The only Explosions in the Sky i like is The World Is Not a Cold Dead Place, and I rarely listen to anything other than Your Hand in Mine off that. Also, yes the latest Mono is really, really good.

Angmar

They're the cookie cut-out band of post rock.

Well it's not as if I'm a total noob to the genre, care to rec some bands? Or in fact, give me one single reason why EITS are bad?

 are you serious?

Bark Psychosis made the same music 10 years before EITS even thought of forming a band.

Benzum
03-07-2009, 10:34 AM
I only have Hex and Codename Dustsucker but never listen to them that much. I'll occasionally spin them but they never leave a memorable melody. Fair enough the structures are solid but they just don't execute it in the same way.

Everyone else has already said the good bands really, I just don't understand why you think they're so unique and revolutionary, bands like them were around way before they were.

Benzum
03-07-2009, 10:36 AM

Yeah I hear that fathers of the genre thing a lot but I also hear Godspeed are semi-fathers of the genre and they're not that good so idk

Is it Tortoise or Torche that's the other post-rock band I forget? I'll get that too

Benzum

As in they pioneered the genre or in Godspeed's case they made it popular?

I wouldn't say they were, they're more with the sludge/stoner/psychadelic sub-genre(s)
